Design quality research projects, connecting ontology, epistemology, methodology, and research methods. 3 Judiciously select appropriate methodologies and methods to conduct research. 4 Examine qualitative research proposals for their methodological quality and ethical sensitivities. 2.2 Approach to Learning Students are expected to work as a group and individually. All activities included in the unit are connected. This means that you have to participate from the beginning to the end of the teaching period. For an individual task, you still need to attend the workshops as well as do extra readings in order to do well in your assignments. Students have a 2-hour on-campus tutorial every week as well as material to watch and read in the vUWS online learning platform. It is expected that you engage in unit learning activities independently for, on average, a further 8 hours each week outside of class time. This includes completing assigned readings/ activities for upcoming tutorials, revising for tutorials and preparing for written assessments. Unit Contact Protocol: If you have any questions, concerns, or problems, please follow the guidelines below: 1. If your question is personal, private or only affecting you, and the answer should not interest other students, please contact your tutor after class in the first instance. 2. If your question is about administration, participation, advice or instructions applicable to all students, and the answer should interest other students, check the Learning Guide first for an answer. If you cannot find an answer to your question in the Learning Guide, check the Discussion Board on vUWS, posting a new question if necessary. Questions that are repeated in multiple threads will not be answered. Please review the questions previously listed on the Discussion Board to ensure that your question has not already been answered. 3. If your question is about academic knowledge and skills, check the tutorial materials, the textbook and other learning resources on vUWS first. If you can’t answer your academic question from these materials, check the Discussion Board and post new question if necessary, or take your question to next tutorial for discussion. The librarians and the library website are also a fantastic resource for academic literacy and skills. 4. If none of the above applies or resolve your queries, then email the unit coordinator for an appointment

The proposal should reveal the importance of your study and show that you have thought about your study in an in-depth and scholarly manner. At the end of a good proposal, the reader should be able to claim that your study is worthwhile, and that you have selected the correct research design and appropriate research methods. The proposal should be written as if you are submitting your proposal for external review and approval.
Students are required to include the following in their proposals: • Title of your proposal. The title should not be too long but sufficient to capture the essence of your proposal. • List all research questions to which you wish to find answers from your proposed research. • A statement of the general research aim as well as list all research objectives of your research. • Provide the background to the study (i.e. literature review) and a justification for the need of this particular study (i.e. research gap) • Research design. This is where you can briefly refer back to your ontological and epistemological position linking it back to the methodological framework adopted, the research method(s), research participants, data analysis, ethical issues and rigour of your proposed research. You may use sub-headings within this main section. • Research plan and time line. This can be an estimation, and some parts of the project can happen while others are happening. It is good to make this up as a table. • Discuss some limitations of your proposed research. This can be relevant to the issue you wish to investigate or the difficulty in recruiting research participants and so on. • List all references you cite in the research proposal. Ensure the format is consistent throughout. Try not to use more than 30 references in your proposal and use up-to-date references unless they are theoretical/historical pieces.
