Considering the students in my field experience classroom, I would organize a field trip that was interactive, engaging, and of course, fun. I would stay away from field trips that consisted of mostly listening to someone present information without some type of interaction. Before the field trip, I would talk about appropriate behaviors with the students and what is expected of them as well as communicate how the daily schedule will change. I will go over all this again on the morning of the field trip. On the field trip, I would utilize parent volunteers and break up the class into smaller groups with a parent chaperone. I would preset the groups to separate students who I know would cause issues if partnered and group the student with behavioral issues in my group. I would also make sure I have a list of any known medical issues, allergies, and triggers for behavior issues.
The expectations of the students, procedures for student medical emergencies, and IEP or 504 interventions and accommodations would remain the same as would consequences for not listening. Restroom procedures would change somewhat as students would need to always be paired and with a chaperone rather than going on their own. Transitions would also change because times and places would be different, but students would still be expected to line up quietly and quickly when instructed. comment as you see fit.
