You’re thinking, So how’s that working out for you, Joanna? Great clothes rack? Maybe you’ve been down this road. Maybe, like me, you’ve joined gyms and attended—regularly at first, then periodically, then sporadically—until one day, you don’t re-member your locker number. Maybe you’ve acquired treadmills, sta-tionary bikes, spinning bikes, or miracle cures bought off late-night television infomercials. Well, three years later, I can honestly say—on behalf of the family … this big, gray, ugly machine is beloved! Just look at my journal: 900 workout sessions recorded. After my many tailed attempts, why is it working this time around? What’s different? Drumroll, please. It’s not about fitness or weight loss. I work out to feel good. It’s that simple.

    If you have a family that is experiencing crisis the best way to support that family is by reaching out and providing resources that may help. There are so many families out there in current crisis and they just do not know where to turn for help. If you can tell by the child’s appearance that maybe they need shoes or clothing, send a flier home with some resources on them. Send a flier home with every child in the class so it appears inclusive. Call the family and see how you can help. We have a resource center right across the street from us and sometimes I just simply get the student new things from there, have them change and put the old ones in their backpack. The parents that really need things are grateful, but some are just too prideful to ask. And if you approach the situation with understanding and empathy, parents are much more responsive. I had a family last year that disliked the paraprofessional before me. She is a nice lady, but the issue is when she talks to people less fortunate it almost sounds like she talks down to them. The parents took her help offensively and would shout at her that they did not want her hand outs. Parents will not accept help if they feel less than. Based on Matthew 25:35-40, God feels that if you help the less fortunate you are also helping him. Comment as you see fit
