One of the biggest hurdles I have seen ELL students face in my classroom in the past is parental involvement. It is so important for parents and teachers to be partners in their child’s education to ensure success. This can become very difficult for ELL students when their parents likely speak little to no English. I have experienced this many times in the past and had to come up with unique ways of communicating with families in order to bridge that divide. A few of our readings this week speak on this and discuss ways we can encourage involvement from these families. In one of the articles I read from the Journal of Latinos and Education, the authors discussexamples of ways in which schools can use dichos to promote behaviors supportive of children’s literacy. Dichos are words or phrases that are used in jest or refer to popular sayings that will help connect the families. Comment as you see fit. Min 40 words or more.

I actually work with a student whose native language is Spanish. His English is very understandable, but he often answers me in Spanish before correcting himself to English in the classroom. After talking with him, I realized his parents only speak Spanish and they will not allow his to speak English in the home. They fear he will loose his true identity if he abandons his native tongue. This has caused the student some difficulty when in the classroom or when he interacts with his English-speaking peers. However, he is such a joy to teach and his attitude is only that of respect when talking about his parents, even though they do not allow him to practice his English skills in the home. Comment as you see fit. Min 40 words or more.

In AWS, client-side encryption is the act of encrypting data before sending it to Amazon S3. To enable client-side encryption, you have the following options: (1) Use a customer master key (CMK) stored in AWS Key Management Service (AWS KMS); (2) Use a master key that you store within your application. To protect your data privacy against the cloud, it is better to use your master key that you store within your application. However, if you lost your master key, you would be able to decrypt the encrypted data stored in Amazon S3.
Suppose that you decide to use Shamir’s secret sharing scheme for your master key recovery. Shamir’s Secret Sharing is an algorithm in cryptography introduced by Adi Shamir. It is a form of secret sharing, where a secret is divided into parts, giving each participant its own unique part. To reconstruct the original secret, a minimum number of parts is required.

After a few minutes the “client” and the other students can give the “counselor” feedback on how he or she handled the situation.
