Instructions for Assessment 2: Assessing Corporate Entrepreneurial Health
    Rationale
***RESEARCH TO BE DONE ON CSL*****
In order to pursue sustainable competitive advantage, managers must continually assess the levels of innovative and entrepreneurial activity occurring within the company, and the climate and structures the company creates and sustains that support innovation and entrepreneurship.
    The brief
    Analysis Framework
Chapters 3 and 13 of your prescribed text provide relevant theories and detail two validated and widely used measuring instruments for measuring Entrepreneurial Intensity. These are:
Entrepreneurial intensity: This assesses the frequency and innovativeness of new products, services and processes within the company, along with three elements of management decision-making: innovativeness, risk-taking and proactiveness. Combining these allows a company to be placed on the ‘entrepreneurial grid’ (chapter 3, Figure 3-5) and compared to other companies in its industry.
Corporate Entrepreneurship Climate: This assesses how well the culture and structures that the company has created support innovation and entrepreneurship. It involves five factors: Management Support; Work Discretion; Rewards / Reinforcement; Time Availability; and Organizational Boundaries as well as some specific climate variables that may apply.
Chapter 13 explains how these two frameworks have been transformed into validated survey instruments. However, the survey design also provides a useful framework for analysing a company using ‘desk research’ – that is information that has been collected about the company from existing sources, including the company itself.
Additionally, the prescribed text provides other models that may be used to assess the Entrepreneurial Health of your chosen company.
The ideas behind the Corporate Entrepreneurial Health Audit and the two survey instruments used to assess it can be found in the following two articles:
A health audit for corporate entrepreneurship: innovation at all levels: part I
A health audit for corporate entrepreneurship: innovation at all levels: part II
    Research approach
Explore whatever sources you can find, both internal (self-reported by the company) and external (reported by third parties, including industry experts, customers and employees) that provide reliable information about the company’s entrepreneurial intensity or climate for corporate entrepreneurship.
You are encouraged to share your research in the interests of expanding the set of information you will gather for the group assignment.
Remember that a good report depends more on the quality of analysis and the ability to organize it into a logical report structure than it does on the data reported.
    Things to consider
Have you considered industry benchmarks for entrepreneurial intensity?
(e.g. the fashion industry would have high frequency compared with domestic appliances industry – think Zara versus Dyson)
Have you accounted for differences in perspectives on the same framework?
(e.g. it is likely that company reported information may be challenged by external sources)
Have you synthesised the responses into meaningful interpretations?
(what are the implications of your findings?)
Have you followed a systematic approach in presenting your findings?
(a systematic approach makes your report easier to follow and shows clear thinking and a disciplined approach which is less likely to omit key factors)
    Writing Guidelines and Marking Schedule
Please present your report in the following format using the template provided in the LMS assignment brief. Some content guidelines are provided within each section but feel free to change this as you see fit. Please also refer to the rubric for this assessment item.
    Introduction and Company Overview
Purpose of the report and Company overview. This should include how the company describes itself in terms of mission / vision / purpose, with particular attention to any mention of innovation and entrepreneurship.
    Theoretical Concepts
A brief introduction to and overview of key theoretical concepts and definitions that will enable the reader to understand the report. Keep it short and simple and don’t make it read like a text book. It is important to introduce the concept of various antecedents at different levels of analysis and how these inform the state of entrepreneurial health in the organisation. Explain the conceptual difference and connection between Entrepreneurial Intensity and the Climate for Corporate Entrepreneurship and any other models you refer to.
You can also refer to theories and models within the analysis section.
    Research approach
Briefly describe the approach taken to discovering data about your chosen company. Include major categories of sources including:
Self-reporting: What the company discloses about itself, such as annual reports, web site, press releases etc.
External commentary: What external parties report about the company, such as industry reports, journal articles, expert commentators. Customer and employee forums may also be of value.
Aim to show that you have used reliable sources and methods.
    Data Analysis and Discussion
Part A:Assess the entrepreneurial intensity of your chosen company.
Using data you have collected from your research, make an informed judgement about the entrepreneurial intensity of the company. Remember to consider frequency of entrepreneurship, degree of newness and the company’s attitude to innovativeness, risk-taking and proactiveness. If possible, position the company on the Entrepreneurial Grid, alongside major competitors.
Part B:Assess the Corporate Entrepreneurship Climate (CEC) of your chosen company.
Using data you have collected from your research, make an informed judgement about the climate for corporate entrepreneurship within the company. Refer to the five factors of the CECI instrument (Chapter 13, Table 13-2) and any other models that help to interpret and diagnose the CEC within the company.
Other theories and models may be referred to in this section also.
    Conclusion
Summarise the main issues and interpret the relative findings of your research and analysis. Synthesise all of the above sections into a cohesive whole that identifies the main strengths and weaknesses of the company with respect to Entrepreneurial Health and draws an overall conclusion about the implications for the future performance of the company.
    PLEASE NOTE:
you do not have to make any recommendations; this assignment is only about analysing and assessing the entrepreneurial health of the company.
    Report Format
All three assignments must be presented in the format of management reports that comply with the following:
    Format: Microsoft Word.
Font: 12 point, Times New Roman.

  • Driving cost out of the supply chain has kept businesses on their toes for the last 30 years, but…

Driving cost out of the supply chain has kept businesses on their toes for the last 30 years, but in doing so many have incrementally increased their exposure to risk; sometimes to catastrophic levels. This may be expected in situations of pure cost reduction with no regard to product quality or service delivery, but even some of the wunderkind of procurement, who recognize that cost reduction can be allied to innovation and competitiveness, have not been immune to this folly. One classic and high-profile case which I’m exploring in this paper is Boeing. With a globe-spanning supply chain, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner became the fastest-selling aircraft in aviation history. Boeing’s share price skyrocketed, and the C-suite received their bonuses. Procurement supporting the business at its best and the work was done, or was it?
    Background
On 10 November 2013, a 787 Dreamliner flight operated by Japan Airlines developed a problem with its battery – the latest in a spate of problems plaguing Boeing’s 787 aircraft. A cockpit indicator in the aircraft pointed to a problem with the battery connected to the aircraft’s auxiliary power unit. The 787 Dreamliner was developed by leading airplane manufacturer the US-based Boeing Airplane Company (Boeing). The 787 Dreamliner was Boeing’s modern jet in which the aircraft manufacturer used new technology to cut the cost of fuel used for operating the plane by 20 per cent. To reduce weight and improve fuel efficiency, the aircraft manufacturer used carbon-fibre materials and electronic systems with more powerful generators and higher-energy lithium-ion batteries.
Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner was expected to be a game-changer for the commercial airline industry. According to public sources, although nearly 900 aircraft have been sold, Boeing’s profitability came into question as the organization’s far-reaching global supply chain began to quickly suffer fatigue. The 787 dream was to systematically reduce development time from typically six to four years and cut associated costs from around $10 billion to $6 billion. The result has been catalogued more like a nightmare. The project is reported to be billions of dollars over budget and three years behind schedule.
Let’s examine the back story. Reports say that the 787 was Boeing’s response to losing market share to Airbus in the late 1990s. It decided to innovate with a new aircraft that would generate revenues by creating value for customers in two ways:
    • First it aimed to improve the passenger travel experience. Using a composite material in the 787 allowed increased humidity and pressure to be maintained in the passenger cabin, which offered substantial improvement to the flying experience.
    • Second, the lightweight composite materials would enable the 787 to fly non-stop to and from anywhere in the world.
At the heart of the problem is Boeing’s mimicry of other organizations ‘best practice’ (supported by experts).

Both the AAS and AES should already be setup and ready to go. Similarly, the AAS
and AES software should already be loaded on the computer and all necessary operating
parameters for the experiment defined. However, it is wise and a good practice to
double-check them. To check the instrument parameters for AAS, proceed as follows:
    (a) Click with the right mouse button on the Method icon (on the left-hand toolbar)
and select Properties. Confirm the System Type is set to Flame.

    (b) Select the Description tab on the Method notebook and confirm that the atomic
symbol for iron is the element being analysed. If it is not, enter the atomic symbol
for iron in the Element Field.
    (c) Next, confirm the operating parameter for the lamp by choosing the Instrument tab
of the method notebook. The parameters should appear as in Table 1. If not, adjust
    them appropriately.
Table 1. Summary of Instrument Parameters for Fe analysis.
    Lamp current: 7 mA
    Wavelength 248.3 nm
    Slit width 0.2 nm
    Slit height normal
    Background correction: off.
    (d) Finally, check the initial optimisation on the hollow cathode lamp and burner as
    follows:
    (i) Select the Instrument icon (on the left-hand toolbar) and a picture of the
instrument should appear. Double click the “bulge” on the top left of the
picture of the instrument. Adjust the vertical and horizontal alignment
knobs (see Figure 8 for their position) to achieve a maximum signal on the
reference HC meter, i.e. maximum light throughput (ensure that the burner
is not in the light path). If the needle in the meter goes over the range, press
the spacebar. Take care not to unscrew the knobs completely. Close the
status panel by clicking the x in the top right of the status panel window.
(ii) Place a white card on top and orthogonally and centrally along the burner.
Using the vertical adjustment knob raise the burner until the centre of the
light beam is 6-8 mm above the burner. Use the horizontal adjustment knob
and rotation control to place the centre of the light beam above the burner
slot and the beam parallel to the slot. A final optimisation of the burner
position will be performed later whilst aspirating a standard.

    750-1000 Words
This unit, we read two short stories: “Romantic Weekend” by Mary Gaitskill and “Ysrael” by Junot Diaz. We also read three poems by Adrienne Rich: “Song,” “Two Songs,” and “Aunt Jennifer’s Tiger.”
Your task in essay one is to identify a theme that seems prominent in either one story or one or two poems. If you choose “Song” and “Two Songs,” for example, you might identify the theme, ‘feminism’ or ‘independence’ or ‘gender in society.’ And if you choose to write about, “Romantic Weekend” or “Ysrael,” you might identify such themes as ‘domination’ or ‘cruelty.’ Once you’ve identified the theme, you should identify how and what your chosen author has to say about it.
To recap, in this assignment you should:
    • Write a clear thesis statement that argues your interpretation of the text. A thesis statement is a summary of your main idea(s.) In this case, your thesis statement should deal with both thematic and technical aspects of your chosen story. It should appear in the first paragraph of your essay.
    • Argue your thesis statement throughout your paper. Every example you choose should help to support your thesis statement. Your introduction should present what you will argue; the body of your paper should support that argument.
    • Choose and include at least three relevant quotations from your chosen story. When including a quotation, be sure to give any information that is necessary for the reader to properly consider it. Also, be sure to analyze and explain the quotation’s significance after including it.
