Write a specific response in which you address the following in your own words. Paraphrase properly, quote sparingly, and explain your understanding of any quoted material. Include in-text citations as needed. Number your answers. 1. In one to two full paragraphs, discuss what struck you as significant – and why – about the ways Frederick Douglass went about acquiring literacy and freedom. Base your response only on your reading of Chapters VII and XI of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. 2. Metamorphosis means transformation. We know that Gregor Samsa transforms physically, but how does he transform psychologically? What changes do you see in his family members? Base your response on your reading of Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis. 3. In one to two full paragraphs, discuss why it is important to remember such events as the Holocaust. Base your response on Primo Levi’s poem “If This is a Man” and the documentary Finding Kalman, both in the materials for Week 10. (You may also refer to Tadeusz Borowski’s This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentleman.) 4. In one to two full paragraphs, discuss the changes you see in Delia Jones from the beginning of the story to the end. How do you interpret the ending of the story and why? Base your response on your reading of Zora Neale Hurston’s short story “Sweat” (link in the materials for Week 10).
