The final historiographical essay requires that you write a 1250-1500 word research essay about a significant work of United States history written before our time. All essays must have a suitable title. Footnotes are required. All sources, as well as the bibliography, must conform to Turabian's
_A Manual for Writers, 9th ed_. Please make your selection from the list which follows.

    You have
**three main tasks** in this essay. You should:

    1. Discuss the origins of the book. How does it reflect the historical, intellectual, and/or biographical context in which it was written? What works did it build on, complement, or seek to revise or refute?

    2. Discuss the life of the book after publication. How was this work received by other scholars (and possibly the public) in its time, and how have opinions of the book changed in the years since then and now? What historians have responded to it, challenged it, or rejected it?

    3. Offer your own judgments as to how the book is, or is not, useful to historical scholarship today. Was the book important? Why or why not?

    Your job is
**not** to summarize the argument of the book. You will end up doing some summarizing in order to make your points, but this is not a standard book review, which usually summarizes a book and then offers a thumbs up/thumbs down evaluation. To quote Pierre Bayard, in this assignment, "the interior of the book is less important than its exterior." Your essay is about the "location" of your book, or in other words, how it is situated in relation to other scholarship – in a word, context.

This means you will have to read the book selected as well as other scholarship. You should also read:

    · Reviews of your book from as many places as possible

    · Biographical information on its author if available

    · Retrospectives on the book if you can find them

    · Works that may have influenced, or been influenced by, the book you chose. Note that the short reviews in scholarly history journals like The American Historical Review do not offer very useful models for this assignment.

    Once again, this essay is
**NOT** a review of book reviews.

**Your book choice must be selected from this list of known winners:**

    · Frederick Jackson TURNER, "The Significance of the Frontier in American History" (1893)

    · Charles BEARD,
_An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution of the United States_ (1913)

    · Ulrich B. PHILLIPS,
    _American Negro Slavery_ (1918)

    · W. E. B. Du BOIS,
    _Black Reconstruction in America_ (1935)

    · Richard HOFSTADTER,
_The American Political Tradition and the Men Who Made It_ (1948)

    · Henry Nash SMITH,
_Virgin Land: The American West as Symbol and Myth_ (1950)

    · Oscar HANDLIN,
_The Uprooted: The Epic Story of the Great Migrations That Made the American People_ (1951)

    · Richard HOFSTADTER,
_The Age of Reform: From Bryan to F.D.R._ (1955)

    · C. Vann WOODWARD,
_The Strange Career of Jim Crow_ (1955)

    · Perry MILLER,
    _Errand into the Wilderness_ (1956)

    · Stanley ELKINS,
    _Slavery_(1959)

    · Eleanor FLEXNER,
_Century of Struggle: The Woman's Rights Movement in the United States_ (1959)

    · William Appleman WILLIAMS, The Tragedy of American Diplomacy (1959)

    · Richard HOFSTADTER,
    _Anti-Intellectualism in American Life_ (1964)

    · Kenneth M. STAMPP,
_The Era of Reconstruction, 1865-1877_ (1965)

    · Gerda LERNER,
_The Grimké Sisters from South Carolina: Rebels against Authority_ (1967)

    · John BLASSINGAME,
_The Slave Community: Plantation Life in the Antebellum South_ (1972)

    · Edmund MORGAN,
    _American Slavery, American Freedom_ (1976)

    · Howard ZINN,
_A People's History of the United States_ (1980)

    **Important Notes:**

    · The essay you submit should be carefully scrutinized for errors. I tire quickly with essays that use "their" instead of "there" or "where" instead of "were." Proofread, and then proofread some more!

    · In general, all-purpose internet sources cannot be used for citation purposes. Exceptions are the scholarly websites and documents available through the APUS Online Library, or other academic websites. While indeed useful for a quick reference, Wikipedia is not considered a valid academic source.

    · The number of students using generative AI tools to compose posts and replies is escalating at an alarming rate. Just so you know, I can sort of tell when AI has been used and whether its usage is a sign of misuse or misconduct. I have NO problem if you are using AI intelligently and responsibly. BUT, if you do use AI you also need to:

    · cite the tool used, and

    · cite the text used in your prompt

    · Please make sure you have carefully reviewed
[University Guidelines Resources: AI in the Classroom [content page]](https://myclassroom.apus.edu/d2l/common/dialogs/quickLink/quickLink.d2l?ou=999106&type=content&rcode=00D22884-7DC5-4408-809B-589E36B04C5A-770328).

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

Regardless of what type of relationship we are in—whether in terms of friendship, romance, or family members, all relationships are in the process of either developing or dying.  This paper requires you to analyze a family relationship using communication concepts/theories and principles from our readings, lessons, discussions etc.

The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize students with all of the course objectives.  You are to analyze interpersonal communication principles and concepts in the development, maintenance, and possibly, the deterioration of a long termsignificant family relationship.  The relationship you choose to write about can be one that you are currently engaged in, or one that has already ended.   It should, however, be a fairly recentone, not a relationship you had in grade school.  If you cannot think of one involving a family member then and only then can it be a friendship relationship or a romantic relationship.  You don’t need to disclose any information you are not comfortable with disclosing and please change names for privacy.

    **Content**

This paper involves more than just simply summarizing the development of a relationship.  While you will want to offer some description of the relationship; the main emphasis should be on how it has developed in **communication** between two people.  You should organize your paper into the following three parts:

    1. **Introduction**:  Describe the relationship.  Who are the participants?  What is the history of the relationship?  What is the current status of the relationship?  This information should be relatively brief.  Next, introduce the body of the paper by indicating the terms/concepts you will use to analyze the relationship.

    1. **Body**:  In this section of the paper you will analyze the relationship using interpersonal communication concepts, terms, topics, etc.  This is by far the longest section of the paper.

    • First organize the body of the paper around the stages of relationship development (see your textbook and utilize your research).  These stages can provide an excellent outline for the paper.  The key here is to talk about how the stages are created in COMMUNICATION.  How did communication change to move the relationship to another stage, and how did communication define a certain stage?

    • Select at least three concepts that we’ve discussed in class and apply them to your relationship.  You may discuss these concepts and how they affected the communication in your relationship as you take us through the stages, or you may want to discuss them apart from the stages in terms of how they have played out in your relationship.

Topics discussed in this class – social learning theory, attachment theory, social exchange theory, cohabitation, parent child communication, parent roles, different types of family stressors, extended family, family stress and how to cope

**Conclusion**:  This section includes a brief summary of the body of the paper.  End the paper with some reflections on your relationship, and what you learned as a result ofwriting

    **Recruitment & Selection Plan**

In  this assignment you will prepare a recruitment plan for a project  associate position at State University.  You will use the attached job  description and recruitment plan template as a guide.

    **Instructions:**

You are a **Consulting Recruiter with XYZ Recruitment, Inc**. You have been contracted by **"State University"** to assist them with the recruitment and selection of a **Project Associate** for  the university. A job description for this position is attached to  assist you with the development of your recruitment plan.

For  this assignment, create a PowerPoint presentation for the HR team of  the university that details your recruitment strategy, description, and  tactics. Your presentation must be a minimum of 12 slides, and no more  than 15 substantive slides. You do not have to include notes within the  presentation information.

Review the article below for examples of information you may wish to include in your grid or presentation:

Maurer, R. (2015). [Assessing Your Recruiting Function for Compliance and Best Practices](https://www.shrm.org/resourcesandtools/hr-topics/talent-acquisition/pages/lori-kleiman-2015-talent-management-conference.aspx?_ga=2.48272546.569036889.1595205773-1116524278.1594085330).

**Submission Instructions:**  Submit your work in the attached template, including a recruitment grid  and a separate PPT presentation of the plan (include supporting  references and at least one citation for each reference). The notes are  not required within the presentation.

Use  the attached excel sheet as a guide for the recruitment grid portion of  your assignment.  You should submit something similar detailing a tool  that could be used in the selection of an employee to fill the role of  the job description attached.  You will need to fill in the highlighted  areas (essential and desirable qualifications of the job).  You can  include more that 4 requirements in each area if you like.  You can  adjust the tool to best fit the role to be filled.

Include instructions in the matrix on how to use the tool (revise instruction on the sample template).

    **Helpful Tips:**

You must support your ideas, arguments, and opinions with independent research, and include at least _**three (3) supporting references or sources**_(Note: do not use  dictionaries, encyclopedias, Wikipedia, unknown, undated, or anonymous  sources, such as brief articles from websites), and at least one  citation for each reference used in this assignment.

**Your grade will be based upon:**

    – Depth and applicability of the research that you conduct.
    – Effectiveness of the recruitment plan as a consulting **tool.**
    – Critical thought and analysis.
    – APA format (APA, 7th Edition).
    – Professionalism of grid and presentation.
    – Use of notes section of presentation.
