Deep Dive Conversation 7: Shrinking the Afro-Eurasian World (400 words)

Hello! Remember, conversations are meant to help us think about, digest, discuss, and question the issues we are confronting and the materials we are engaging. Pick something from the Deep Dive options that looks interesting, read (or watch or listen to) it, and then tell us about it. Some tips:

    · Go beyond simple summaries of the item you selected (though your summary should be accurate)

    · Share what you found interesting, surprising, or significant about what you read (or viewed, or heard)

    · Connect the item back to what we read and/or viewed for this module ("Things everyone should read and review" from the module front page)

Let's be sure that our conversations are informal, open, and engaging dialogues (and keep in mind you are more than welcome to use the video function to record yourself—note that it may take a few minutes to save). You can review the tips for conversations

    **What is in the News?**

**Explore various business news sources like these:**

    – Forbes
    – New York Times on the Web
    – Marketwatch
    – Morningstar
    – MSNBC
    – Fox Business
    – BBC Business
    – Business Week
    – Other reputable business news sources of your choosing

**Find a story in the recent news headlines about financial management in the** **business****world (no personal finance articles, and nothing older than 90 days).**

This is a very broad topic, so you should have plenty of material from which to choose. Find something noteworthy regarding major business decisions and dig into the details!

Again, stay away from personal finance articles (e.g., investing, real estate, life insurance) and focus instead on the world of **business finance** – capital management, the agency problem, initial public offerings (IPOs) of stock, time value of money — topics you have been studying and reading about so far within this course.

**Write an e (2 – 4 double-spaced pages) on how this story may affect you as a business finance professional now or in the future.**

Paraphrase the articles you locate and then apply the knowledge you have gained. Organize your writing using descriptive headings and subheadings.

Document your research using appropriate **APA style** conventions (reference list, in-text citations).

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

Understanding the dynamic of power and influence as it relates to teams will allow you to determine the appropriate decision-making approaches for various team structures that you will encounter in the workplace. Team motivation is a key aspect of successful teams. This assessment is designed to help you discover common reasons team members lose motivation and help you find resolutions to those motivational challenges.

    **Group Conflict**

    **Scenario**

Imagine that two small manufacturing businesses in Chicago, IL, operated in direct competition with each other for 20 years. Due to recent changes in economic conditions, the two businesses combined in a horizontal merger. When the businesses merged, 20% of the workforce at each company was let go. The combined employees now work together in a new building.

The transition has not been a smooth one. Much of the remaining workforce is unmotivated to make personal changes to fit into the new business. Many employees are unclear about the direction the new organization is taking and the specific goals that need to be met. Communication among employees is also strained; employees resist working with people who were previously their competitors. There is very little information sharing and a lack of cooperation among employees. You have been called in to assess the situation and make recommendations to help motivate employees as members of the new business.

To prepare for this assignment, complete the following:

    – Based on the scenario provided, determine 2 or 3 reasons the employees are not motivated in the new work environment. These reasons should be founded on concepts covered in the text.
    – Determine your rationale regarding why these factors are affecting the employees.
    – Locate at least 3 articles in the [University Library](https://library.phoenix.edu/home) that address your identified reasons. Use the information in these articles to create solutions to the business's problems.

Prepare a 1,050- to 1,400-word project plan that includes an executive summary at the beginning that details a strategy to improve employee motivation in the new work environment. **Include** the following:

    – Recommendations for improving employee motivation
    – Recommendations for team-building activities
    – Major milestones in the project plan for what will be implemented and how it aligns with the recommendations
    – Explanation of how the progress will be evaluated

**Cite** any sources to support your assignment.

**Format** your assignment according to APA guidelines.

These may be from the textbook(s), the Perusall articles, Relias, the viewings, or other sources the student may be familiar with (other articles, other viewings, other books, etc.). A reference page is NOT required except if the student includes a reference to a source that is not part of this course. In such a case, a reference list in APA format must be included.

    · Each reflection will be related to a different theme for that Module and the reflection must respond to the included prompts in their reflection.

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

In a field all about behavior, the performance of others is critically important, and as such, appropriately provided feedback is crucial. Think about the types of feedback that you receive from those who are in a supervisory position over you. Describe the things you like and dislike about receiving feedback. If you are in a position in which you are required to provide feedback to others, describe how you do so, considering the same topics as in the first prompt (e.g., location, etc.). There maybe times when it varies, so give detailed examples of why you may choose a different style or delivery in certain situations. If you currently are not in such a position, describe how you would want to do so, perhaps in a future leadership position.

As behavior analysts, we focus on observable and measurable _behavior_. We also recognize that our ability to get along with others in a professional manner is important to our success as leaders in our field. The concept of emotional intelligence (EQ) is one commonly discussed in leadership in other fields. Alhough EQ is not a behavior and is instead a hypothetical construct, it may be necessary when we are providing feedback to those we lead. Take this [Emotional Intelligence TestLinks to an external site.](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/tests/personality/emotional-intelligence-test) to learn more about how emotionally intelligent you are and how well you read the emotions of others. Are the results what you would have expected for yourself, why or why not? Describe why the hypothetical construct of “EQ” is important for a behavior analysis leader, especially when it comes to providing feedback. In other words, despite the fact that “emotional intelligence” is not an observable behavior, what aspects of the skills of empathy and reading others’ behaviors could be useful when providing feedback to others? You may speak more broadly and generally or you may feel free to describe one or more situations in which you observed a lack or a lot of EQ on the part of someone providing feedback and its impact on the other person’s performance.

Are there any aspects of the feedback that you provide that you would like to improve upon? Describe in detail any improvements you want to make, why you want to make them, how they will improve performance of others, and how you plan to make these changes. If you are not presently in a position that requires you to give feedback, think hypothetically to the future and reflect on how you would like to one day provide feedback.
