One of the most significant primary source genres to come out of early Christianity in the Roman world was the acts of the martyrs. These texts documented the faith, persecution, and even deaths of martyrs in grueling detail. Such people probably made a deep impression on their fellow Christians, although it’s important to remember that the vast majority of Christians who were put in this position chose to sacrifice to the state cult and survive. The martyrs’ faith probably also impressed a certain number of pagans. Perpetua’s Passio is one of the richest of these texts, and it reveals many aspects of early Christianity and everyday life in the late Roman Mediterranean world: gender, education, slavery, and prison life, etc. Sources. We will encounter Perpetua’s Passio in two formats: the Graphic History by Jennifer Rea and Liz Clarke and the primary text written by Perpetua herself.1 Wednesday 7 April: We will discuss Perpetua’s Journey, the “Graphic History,” pp. 1-86.2 (about four comic book issues in length) Friday 9 April: We will discuss Perpetua’s Journey, the “Perpetua’s Prison Diary,” pp. 167-181. 3 Perpetua Project Breakdown (20% overall grade). This project will combine two different aspects using Perpetua’s Journey. We’ll be reviewing the graphic history as it stands on its own and conducting a historical analysis of the primary source.
