In this paper, we are to look at Manha De Carnival by Sigman and Bonfa, which is arguably one of the most popular Brazilian pieces in the repertoire. This musical piece can be said to contain jazzy features, with the help of heavy rhythm and drums, the musical piece is able to create a base rhythm.
Although, this piece does not entirely rely on the said instrument, but it also makes use of other instruments to make sure that the whole piece retains its harmony, instruments such as the banduria, piano and saxophone. When listening to this musical piece we can’t help but think of two lovers dancing at a slow pace with moves that increases in pace at certain points in time as if doing a Venetian Waltz, if not, the song gives us great rhythm and tone which is perfect for Salsa.
The form of this song is quite strange, but the melody in phrase may be viewed in different ways. There are three different sections which contain a total of 8 bars which are broken into 2 four bar phrases. The Coda section, which is the part that brings the musical piece to an end, contains a total of twelve bars which is appropriately broken into 1 eight bar phrase and 1 four bar phrase. In regards to the typical form which is AABA which contains eight bars for each section and a total of 32 bars, the Manha De Carnival breaks this tradition. This certain musical piece contains a total of 36 bars which is just like the many songs which breaks the typical rule.
In this song (Manha De Carnival), there were 2 different musical ideas, idea A and idea B. The structure throughout this song is “AABAAB”. The timings of different sections are idea A (0:15, 0:46, 3:19 and 3:47) and idea B (1:01 and 4:01). It has a saxophone solo comes from 1:20 to 2:19, and then follows by a piano solo from 2:20 to 3:20. There are repeating of the musical ideas fulfilled the concept of unity. It shown idea A repeated four times and idea B repeated two times.
In the musical piece Manha de Carnival, the composer makes use of different dynamics due to the fact that the different sections of ideas repeated are in different dynamics. In fact, it can be noted the first half of the song is played louder than the second half of the piece. The background of this musical piece makes use of brass and drums which is played softly all throughout which helps maintain its unity. This piece also contains the capability of having a saxophone solo and a piano solo performance.
The Variety of Music (timbre) is very important for a listener to actually enjoy a musical piece, this is why it is better for an ensemble to perform it.
This song is a piece of jazz music and it is in a Samba style. I think this piece is trying its best to tell people to enjoy their life. When I am listening to this song I feel very relaxed. When there are some difficult things which I do not know how to solve, I would listen to this song to make me happier and make me more relaxed.
