Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this laboratory exercise you will
be able to:
• Recall essential MATLAB syntax and skills learnt in
EEET2248 – Electrical Engineering Analysis and utilise
those in basic signal processing applications.
• Become familiar with generating and displaying basic
signals in MATLAB.
Introduction to the laboratory
The main piece of software that will be used this semester is
MATLAB by MathWorks, this software package has previously
been utilised and introduced to you in EEET2248 – Electrical
Engineering Analysis and this semester its use will be expanded
to signal processing related applications.
MATLAB is a high-level programming language designed and
optimised for use in many fields of engineering and
mathematics. MATLAB stands for MATrix LABoratory and was
originally created to allow for efficient manipulation of matrices.
MATLAB has evolved over the years to now include many
inbuilt functions and toolboxes for a diverse range of areas;
signal processing, communications, control systems, statistics
and embedded systems are just some of the areas MATLAB has
functions and toolboxes for.
The main aim of this experiment is to review some of the
material covered in EEET2248 – Electrical Engineering Analysis,
particularly looking at how we can extend the use of MATLAB
to manipulate basic signals.

Identify whether the methodology is qualitative, quantitative or mixed method in approach and…
Students will select one scholarly research article from the three provided below. Analyse their selected article by responding to the areas identified below that speak to evaluating the connection between the theoretical framework presented by the authors and the methodological approach they took. To do this students will need to identify the conceptual construct and theoretical framework directing the research, methods used, study limitations, and other theoretical and ethical issues of the research project the article describes.

(1), 100–118. https://doi.org/10.1080/21670811.2016.1152160
Select for analysis ONE scholarly research article from the 3 options provided above.
The article you select is an example of original research using one of the three methods we have studied so far. In your analysis of the study you will need to:
Identify and critique the rationale of the study;
Consider if this study responds to a gap in the research, builds upon existing research, applies a new technique or responds to a social problem.
Identify and critique the research question(s) or hypothesis;
Assess whether the question set or hypothesis testing approach draws on a theoretical framework.
Identify the conceptual construct directing the research questions.
Describe the definitions presented in the literature review that define the scope and application of the questions or hypothesis.
Critique whether the conceptual construct and its associated definitions clarifies, focuses or limits the scope of the study.
Describe and critique the research methodology;
Identify whether the methodology is qualitative, quantitative or mixed method in approach and justify your analysis of this with external source references.
Describe and critique the choice of research population or data universe
Identify and critique the data collection method and sampling approach
Identity the analytical components of the method, define what they are and how they are used.
Critique whether the authors have applied the data collection and analytical techniques appropriately.
Identify and critique the study limitations
Identify and critique how the researchers addressed the ethical considerations raised by the methodology.
Analyse the study findings; and
Critique whether these are logically connected to the research question and data collection approach.
Consider whether the sampling approach taken will support further generalisation of the study findings
Present an assessment of the heuristic value of the study.
Consider the contribution of the study to gap in existing knowledge
Consider whether the study respond to and either resolve or further expand insight into an existing social problem?
Consider whether the study raises concerns or new insights for further investigation.
Your analysis will need to discuss the above areas in an essay approach and draw on the textbook, unit materials and additional scholarly resources provided in the unit reading list or through your own research.
Use the Harvard system of referencing, providing the sources of your information wherever relevant. Thereference list at the end of the essay should include all sources cited within the body of the essay.
You are likely to draw on between 6-8 scholarly references to support your analysis, including the textbook, unit materials and wider research literature related to the original study. -

You are required to read the readings set for that week, critically reflect on the questions provided and write your reflections in journal format. In total, you will write five separate entries. Sharing is an important part of relationship building.
*Please note: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in particular, and all students, are advised that some readings
contain very sensitive/confronting content
. Some students may find some readings
very distressing
.
Total word length: Approx. 1800 words. In keeping within this word limit, each journal entry should stay within 360-380 words. Keep your journals concise, ‘to the point’, critically reflecting and answering the questions set for that week.
The autobiographical information in the five entries that identifies student’s history, culture and biography must include critical
reflection on the readings, including Textbook chapters.
REFLECTIVE QUESTIONS
Week one:
Think about your own story in relation to The Introduction from Timothy Bottoms’ book. How do you relate to this depiction of Australia? Think about Ernie Grant’s model- Land, Language, Culture, Time, Place, Relationships- when and where were you born, what is your cultural background, what is your history and connections to that place, or the place you now live? How does your reflection and understandings help or hinder you in seeking to build relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples? Link reflections to week one readings.
Week two:
What are the key points for you in these readings based on your previous knowledge?
What you are bringing to social work, negative and positive, from your history and socialisation?
Why do you need to understand history, colonisation and the contemporary legacies for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples? Who have you been socialised to see as inferior or superior peoples? Demonstrate critical reflection in your responses. Link reflections to Week two readings.
Week three:
What did you know about Torres Strait Islanders previously and what have you learned from these readings? What do you need to do/know to engage more respectfully with Torres Strait Islander peoples? What is distinctive Torres Strait Islander history/culture? For further learning view Eddie Mabo Life of an Island Man (WS2121 LearnJCU site). Link reflections to week three readings.
Week four:
What are the impacts of colonisation and the Stolen Generation? Is it different for Aboriginal people than for Torres Strait Islanders? How would this impact manifest in families and communities in contemporary times? Are you aware of your own family’s experiences in relation to the Stolen Generation? Did your family talk about it?
Link reflections to week four readings.
Week five:
What are your experiences of grief and loss? Are these losses personal, cultural, intergenerational? Will your experiences help or hinder you in understanding and empathising with the cycles of grief, loss and trauma experienced as intergenerational legacies for Indigenous Australians? Link your reflections to week five readings. -

Week 3 – Discussion1414 unread replies.1414 replies.
Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above and the Grading Criteria link below for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.
Objectivity and Bias [WLOs: 1, 2] [CLOs: 2, 3, 4]
In this discussion, we’ll continue to build an argument that is appropriate for the rhetorical situation. Through this discussion, you will consider the opinions, assumptions, and biases that may impact your objectivity.
Prepare
Review the discussion grading criteria, read What Lies Beneath the Surface by Joy Meads, and watch the full video
Mind Bugs | Mahzarin R. Banaji | TEDxBari (Links to an external site.)
from TEDx Talks on YouTube.
Then, log on to Project Implicit (Links to an external site.) and take at least one implicit association test (IAT). There are many tests to choose from. You do not have to register or log in. You can take any test(s) as an unregistered “guest” by clicking the orange “GO!” button. Pay close attention to the instructions for each section of the IAT. The rules change!
Reflect
After learning about the IAT and taking the test online, think about your results and the explanation provided by the website. Are the results surprising to you? Do you trust the outcome of the IAT? How did you feel while taking the test and how did you feel when you received the results? Were some parts of the IAT easier than others?
Think about the possible biases, assumptions, and opinions that may be influencing your work in this class. Will Mead’s ten strategies for overcoming unconscious bias help you compose a more objective argument?
Write
Share what you learned from your IAT experience and relate it to Meads’ ten strategies for overcoming unconscious bias.
Then,
remind the class of your research question and share your working thesis statement (See Writing a Thesis Statement (Links to an external site.)),
identify your personal opinions, experiences, assumptions, and associations with the subject of your argumentative essay,
explain how you intend to overcome your biases so you can write an objective research-based argument, and
share how you plan to integrate research into your rough draft this week.
Be sure to speak up if you have any questions or concerns.
