The use of fomative assessments in the classroom to support the common core standards and ongoing is a great tool to have and use for all students especially ELL students. One formative assessment I would use in the classroom would be to keep a daily journal. With this daily journal it would be something like an exit ticket for the student. What we have learned from the day would be what they are writing about in their journal. The students will need to write down three facts and put them into sentences or in a short paragraph. This will be helping them with their writing skills as well as reading skills becasue I would have them share it with peers to read. In addition to keeping a journal students can read one of their passages out loud to the class at the end of the week. This is helping with their speaking skills. I can see how far each student has progressed in each of the three categories of reading, writing and speaking. I can know what each student needs to work on to further their English.Comment as you see fit. Min 40 words or more

  • [ANSWERED] An in-class activity that could be used as a means of employing multiple assessments of ELLs, and…

An in-class activity that could be used as a means of employing multiple assessments of ELLs, and all students in general, is having students use journal writing to respond to a lesson or story. The response can be a choice of sentence starters that allows them to shape where their thoughts will take them, and they go from there. As teachers we need to make our expectations known on these responses, how many sentences? How long are they (are they meaty or bones we can build from)? Once the writing time is over, a time for sharing with the class what was written will provide a great time for assessment by listening to them speak/read to the class their response. The journal can be collected for review of their writing to assess how they are doing. The scoring can be modified for our ELLs from that of our other students to accommodate their proficiency level and goals.
Multiple assessments are important because they allow us to assess in more than one focus area for our students. Using multiple assessments in one project, assignment, or in-class activity allows us to hit on several areas of focus at one time. There is no one assessment that will tell us, as teachers, how our students are progressing through the year. We must capitalize on ways to assess our students’ multiple ways at a time. We can still monitor and chart where necessary in this manner, but our assessments must be clear in what we are looking for, otherwise they are not going to be a good means of tracking (how can one track what they are uncertain they are tracking).
