    **Assignment Directions:**

Complete both of the following written responses. You will need to rely on a balance of direct quotes and paraphrased material, along with proper citations. The basis of both questions is directly linked to the material from our first set of modules. You may utilize information you have previously shared on the discussion board and/or conclusions you have drawn from your classmates. However, any form of plagiarism will not be accepted. Each response must be three double-spaced pages in 12 pt. Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins. In total, you will submit six double-spaced pages.

    **Question 1**

Provide a detailed analysis of how Africana/Black Studies offers a unique lens for properly understanding the realities of Africana men. Consider what social science data reveals about Africana men and explain how Black Studies helps accurately interpret and contextualize that information. Discuss how reliance on a culturally centered perspective allows for a clearer understanding of Africana men and their current conditions under white supremacy. Additionally, explain why Africana/Black Studies should be directly concerned with engaging and addressing the realities facing Africana men.

    **Question 2**

Select one social issue that significantly impacts Africana men. First, explain the issue in detail and provide evidence supporting why it directly affects Africana men. Second, using concepts and ideas discussed in the first set of modules, critically analyze this issue. In your analysis, connect it to broader realities facing Africana people and demonstrate how it intersects with other social, political, economic, or cultural factors. Third, propose at least three concrete solutions that can begin to address this issue. Conclude by explaining how addressing this issue would positively impact the broader Africana community.

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

    ## **Overview**

Last week, you described your application navigation, interface look, and feel—a critical step in designing an application prototype. In this third part of your course project, you design interactive wireframes for 3 application pages and leverage them to create a rudimentary prototype.

    ## **Preparation**

_Note:_ In **Critical Aspects of Interaction Design**, you learned the importance of employing effective techniques for usability, accessibility, responsiveness, and visual appearance. For this assignment, you should focus on usability for the wireframes and visual appearance and functionality for the prototype.

    – Review your previous project work, particularly the design specification document, as you start your design.
    – Review [Tools of the Interaction Design Process: WireframingLinks to an external site.](https://media.capella.edu/CourseMedia/sumid001893/wrapper.asp?panelID=panel3-wireframe).
    – Download the [Wireframes Submission Template [DOCX]](https://canvas.strayer.edu/courses/27618/files/17999303?wrap=1 "cf_Week_7_Wireframes_Submission_Template.docx") [Download Wireframes Submission Template [DOCX]](https://canvas.strayer.edu/courses/27618/files/17999303/download?download_frd=1). Use it to complete and submit this assignment.
    – Investigate and choose your preferred wireframing and prototyping tool(s).
    – Familiarize yourself with Kaltura if you have not used it. You will use it to record the operation of the prototype you create in Part 2 of the assignment.
    – Kaltura Resources:
    – [How to submit a Kaltura Media Assignment in CanvasLinks to an external site.](https://learning.kaltura.com/media/How+to+submit+a+Kaltura+Media+Assignment+in+Canvas/1_pfzhyw8y).

    ## **Instructions**

    ### **Part 1: Design 3 GUI Wireframes**

Complete and submit 3 wireframe renderings of the following pages/screens using the Wireframes Submission Template:

    1. **Home Page:** displays content and various options that the user might desire from the app.
    2. **Primary (Application Level) Page**: displays as one of the choices from the Home screen.
    3. **Secondary Page**(option – choose one of the following):

    – Login Page (sequence): displays user name, password, and optional user verification methods with a choice to enroll/obtain a forgotten user name and password, as well as a mechanism to remember the user for faster subsequent login.
    – Secondary-Level Page: displays content and navigation at a deeper level.

    ### **Part 2: Create a Working Prototype**

Create a working prototype of your homepage and one other page using a design prototyping software of your choice. It should:

    – Accurately reflect the wireframe designs.
    – Include at least one operational interactive element, such as a button that functions as expected.
    – Include complimentary design elements like color, branding, content, navigation, et cetera.

_Use Kaltura to record the successful operation of the prototype._

    ### **Wireframe and Prototype Evaluation Criteria**

Renderings will be evaluated using the following criteria:

    **Wireframe Usability:**

    – **Simplicity**: Keep interfaces clear, with minimal distractions.
    – **Consistency**: Use familiar design patterns so users know what to expect.
    – **Feedback**: Provide clear responses to user actions (e.g., button clicks, form submissions).
    – **Error Recovery**: Help users recover from mistakes gracefully (e.g., undo or helpful error messages).
    – **Navigation**: Guide users logically through content and tasks.

    **Prototype Visual Appearance and Functionality:**

    – **Color schemes** that align with brand and purpose.
    – **Typography** that enhances readability and tone.
    – **Whitespace** to improve focus and prevent clutter.
    – **Icons and imagery** that are meaningful and consistent.
    – **Hierarchy** that guides the user's eye to important elements.
    – **Interactive elements function** as expected.

    ### **Submission Requirements**

    Submit the following completed deliverables:

    1. Wireframes Submission Template.
    2. Kaltura video file that demonstrates successful prototype operation and includes a narration of the video that explains each interface feature.

Do you believe that converting natural forest to plantations could actually be a conservation strategy?

Environmentalists disagree about the role that plantations should play in global conservation. Plantations provide fewer ecosystem services than other forms of forest management, and tree growth is often promoted with fertilizer, herbicides, and prescribed fires. However, plantation forests provide a disproportionate amount of the world’s commercial wood fiber. If the allocation to
plantations were increased to 12 percent, such
forests could possibly meet over 50 percent of
the global demand for wood fiber.

**Feedback from outline that I posted:** _It looks like you are starting to develop your paper with good thoughts, but you want to make sure that you are connecting to specific rhetorical elements. I can see credibility/ethos in the first body paragraph, but are the real-life illustrations pathos or tone or something else? This is also the question I had with your third body paragraph of using reasoning (this could be logos). Just be sure that your topic sentence makes the rhetorical choice clear. I wasn't sure about your citation that you have in the introduction since that isn't the article, so make sure to review that.  Be thinking about quotes that you might pull in as well._

**Monday, February 23rd**. Any essay submitted after this due date but before the 48 hour mark (the end of
**Wednesday, February 25th**) will be accepted but will receive a deduction of ten points (see syllabus). Any essay submitted after the late period will be given a zero.
**Please remember that submitting all three major essays is a requirement, and failing to do so will result in the inability to pass the class.**

    **Essay #1: Summary & Response:**
    **_Mr. Death_**

    **Essay #1 Due: Sunday, 3/1 @ 11:00 PM**

**Formatting & Citation:** Make sure the essay adheres to MLA formatting guidelines. Make sure to cite the film and any other sources consulted using MLA citation procedures.

**Length:** The summary section should be about 2 pages long. The response section should be about 3-4 pages long. Thus, the full essay should be about 5-6 pages long. Do not submit a paper under 5 double-spaced pages in length. In addition, you will include a works cited page, and you will include your answers to my
_Mr. Death_ questions (just your answers, not my questions). All of this will be uploaded to Canvas in a single Word file (.pdf, .doc, or .docx format). Be certain that you are submitting the correct file when you upload your essay to Canvas.

**Purpose & Audience:** Imagine that you are writing for a student in another section of English 1301 who is not familiar with the film
    _Mr. Death_.

    **Focus & Scope:** The
**summary** section must be distinct from the response section (label each section “
    **Summary:**” or “
**Response:**”). The summary should explain what
_Mr. Death_ is about. It should contain important details, but you will not be able to discuss everything that happens in the film. Thus, you should put some thought into the questions:
_What is this film really about_? and
_What information is most essential?_ **Your summary section must have its own thesis statement**, which will sum up the film in one sentence. The summary must not include your opinions about Leuchter or the film. You will discuss your opinions in the response section.

**The thesis of your summary should have three parts, corresponding with the beginning, middle, and end of the film.** Try to succinctly reflect beginning, middle, and end in your thesis statement (it’s fine for your thesis to consist of three complete sentences). Include one body paragraph for each of these three parts. Thus, you will have an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion in the summary section of your essay.

    In the
**response** section, you will discuss your reactions to the film. Some questions to consider include:

-What do the criticisms included in the film (particularly from Roth and Van Pelt) reveal about Leuchter’s claims about the holocaust?

-How do you explain Leuchter’s participation in Zundel’s trial and his involvement in neo-Nazi conferences after the trial?

-Why is he unwilling to consider whether he might be wrong? -What does all of this tell us about Fred Leuchter?

**You must grapple with the moral and/or ethical implications of**

**Leuchter’s choices.** At the rallies and conferences where Leuchter spoke, Hitler was praised, the holocaust was denied, and Jews were vilified. Leuchter knew this and continued to attend and participate. How do you explain this? What is going on with him? Why did he get involved and stay involved? Why won’t he even entertain the possibility that he was wrong?

**The response section must have its own thesis statement.** Consider the ethical and/or moral implications of Leuchter’s choices. Address the matter of logos relative to his claims about the holocaust. And address (in detail) the comments of Roth and Van Pelt.
**Don’t summarize the film in the response section.** The reader will have read a 2-page summary, so don’t waste time summarizing the film again.

**Your essay will be evaluated with reference to the following criteria:**

-How appropriate, accurate, and interesting your thesis statements are

-How focused, accurate, and well-organized your summary is

-How focused, logical, insightful, and well-argued your response is

-How seamlessly and intelligently you incorporate ideas and quotations from the film into your paper

-How well you have considered the issues of audience and purpose

-How clear and correct your writing is

**Some important technical considerations:** The first time you mention the film, use the full title:
_Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr._ Thereafter, you should refer to the film as
_Mr. Death_. Put the title of the film in italics (not quotes).

Say, “Fred Leuchter” the first time you mention him. Thereafter, refer to him as “Leuchter.” The only exception is if you are quoting someone in the film who calls him “Fred.” In that case, use the exact words spoken. This same rule applies to everyone in the film: use their full name the first time you mention them and their last name thereafter.

**Give your essay a title**, which should be centered at the top of page one. The title should announce the subject and genre of the essay. The subject, to be clear, is Errol Morris’s film,
_Mr. Death_. The genre is a summary and response essay.

At the beginning of each section (summary or response)
**please label that section** (i.e. “
**Summary:**”). Make sure the label for each section is flush to the left margin, followed by a colon, and in bold face. Then, hit return, and begin your summary on the next line.
**Do the same for the response**. It must be clear to the reader where the summary ends, and the response begins.

    Make sure to include
**a** **works cited page** at the end of your essay. At Purdue OWL, you will see how to cite a film under “MLA Works Cited: Other Common Sources.” Here is the citation information (but not an actual citation) for
    _Mr. Death_:

**Film:** _Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr._

    **Director:** Errol Morris

    **Performers:** Fred Leuchter (etc.)

    **Production Company:** Lions Gate Entertainment

    **Year of Release:** 1999

When you quote directly from the film, include
**in-text citations**. This means that you should include a time stamp in parentheses after a direct quotation.

You will present the whole essay using
    **MLA General Formatting** **rules**.

This includes margins, font, spacing, etc. Click on the link to Purdue OWL General Formatting Rules (in “Helpful Writing Links”) to read about these requirements.

**Make sure to include your answers to my questions about**
**_Mr. Death_ _after_ your works cited page in the Word file that contains your essay.** If you do not answer these questions with sustained, detailed responses, or if you fail to include these answers with your essay, you will lose points. My questions can be found in “Readings, Etc.”
**Include only your answers (not my questions), numbered in synch with my questions.**

**Finally, read carefully my “Originality Expectation” statement from the syllabus (included below):**

**Originality Expectation**: All writing submitted over the course of the semester must be an original composition for our class. Students may not submit essays which have been composed for previous courses, nor is plagiarism permitted. Avoid the use of artificial intelligence (AI) programs (e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly, revision technologies in Word or elsewhere, Google Translate, or any comparable tool that performs the work of revision for the student). Ignorance of this issue is not a sufficient excuse. The instructor will use Turnitin to check the originality of student work submitted to Canvas.
**AI use is prohibited for all assignments; failure to observe this rule may result in a failing grade.** Likewise, writing that reads as if it were produced by AI (whether Turnitin flags it as such) will be marked down.
**In other words: texts in this class must be composed by a human being and must sound as if they were generated by a human being.** AI-generated prose, for all its “perfection,” is not good writing. It’s stiff, dead, and mechanical. If you write that way, you will need to enliven your prose style.

**Failure to fulfill these expectations may result in a failing grade.**
