Week 8: Assignment – CONCEPT WORKSHEET: Summarizing, Paraphrasing, and Quoting your Peers

As this week’s readings emphasize, summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting are essential techniques for working with sources in academic writing. Mastering these techniques will not only help you avoid plagiarism but also generate stronger writing for research papers and many other kinds of writing.

For this concept worksheet, return to any discussion from a previous week in this class and find 2 posts from other learners that you admire or appreciate. Feel free to choose posts from a couple different past discussions.

Academic writing and technical/professional writing share similarities, yet they differ in purpose, tone, and structure. Academic writing is primarily linear, formal, and evidence-based, with one central argument supported throughout the paper (UEfAP, n.d.). It is complex, objective, precise, and carefully organized. Features such as hedging, explicit transitions, and responsibility for citing sources are essential. In contrast, technical and professional writing focuses more on clarity, usability, and audience needs. For example, workplace documents such as reports or instructions prioritize brevity, visual design, and direct application rather than extended argumentation.

Nursing learners study academic writing because it strengthens critical thinking, research appraisal, and evidence-based practice skills. Writing academically teaches us to analyze scholarly sources, document evidence accurately, and communicate clinical reasoning clearly. These skills are essential for safe patient care and professional accountability.

Personally, I appreciate the organization and logical flow required in academic writing. The structured format helps me present complex healthcare topics clearly. I also value the responsibility of supporting claims with research. However, I sometimes find the formality and strict APA formatting challenging, especially ensuring precision and proper hedging. Despite this, mastering academic writing builds confidence and professionalism in nursing practice.

**1. How to Use an Incentive Spirometer After Surgery**

**2. How to Prevent Pressure Injuries (Bedsores) at Home**

**3. How to Recognize Early Signs of Dehydration in Older Adults**

One strategy I would use is providing description. This means clearly describing what something looks like, feels like, or sounds like so the reader can recognize it. For example, if I wrote about preventing pressure injuries, I would describe what early redness looks like and explain that it may feel warm to the touch. Detailed description helps nonspecialists identify problems correctly.

Another important strategy would be explaining the importance or significance. This means telling the reader why the task matters. For example, I would explain that using an incentive spirometer helps prevent pneumonia after surgery. When readers understand the “why,” they are more likely to follow the instructions carefully.

A third helpful strategy would be providing examples and applications. This means giving real-life scenarios to make instructions practical. For instance, if explaining repositioning, I could say, “If your loved one has been lying on their back for two hours, help them turn onto their side using pillows for support.” Examples make abstract instructions easier to apply in real life.

    **## Task.docx**

**Use the two attached reading to complete the assignment below:**

**1) QUOTATION**(1 point): Select a quotation (2-4 sentences) from one attached reading that you find interesting and/or representative of the author’s larger argument.
_Be sure to use appropriate parenthetical citation_.

**2) CONCEPT/IDEA**(2 points): In this section you should identify the major concept or idea the author is trying to convey, define it in your own words, and describe why it is important
_sociologically_. You should point out how the author supports his/her argument. In doing this, you are to summarize the author's argument,
_not_ critique it. Also, keep in mind that concepts are typically bold faced terms in a text or are larger ideas that have a specific sociological meaning, but your contribution should not merely be a restating of an author’s definition of a concept.

**3)   COMPARISON/CONTRAST**(3 points): Here you will take the ideas raised above and relate it to other course material. You can do this by comparing or contrasting arguments and ideas to other readings used in the course. This includes current readings for the week or from previous weeks. In this section, you may want to point out any similarities or differences between the concepts presented in your summarized reading and the concepts presented in other readings from the course. This comparison must be grounded in the sociological content of the course. The purpose is to strengthen your grasp on the course material for deeper and broader understanding of your social work practice.

**4)   QUESTION**(2 points): Raise 1 related question about the concept/idea discussed above. Questions are like shovels – they are tools we use to dig deeper into the material we are working with. Like shoveling dirt or snow, asking questions can sometimes get messy. Be okay with that; roll your sleeves up. It’s part of the process of deep critical inquiry and thinking. Your questions should relate to and be inspired by the material you’ve been discussing here. Good questions will be thought provoking, discussable, and may even lead to more questions before leading to any answers. Aim to ask questions that will deepen your/our understanding of the issue at hand. You may want to also ask questions that connect the readings to social work practice. We will follow-up on these questions in our class discussions.

    Example:

Quotation: “A critical sociological perspective can shine a discomfiting light on members of privileged groups, if only by making their privileges visible. It becomes harder, then, to teach sociological thinking when such thinking induces guilt and seems like putting one’s self in for blame” (Schwalbe 2008 p.xiii).

Concept/Idea: Schwalbe describes sociological mindfulness as being aware of the larger social context in which we are part of. He applies the notion of sociological mindfulness to the study of inequality. He argues that looking at the world critically and sociologically can be challenging for some people who may feel implicated or at fault for the amount and severity of inequality that exists in society. This is important sociologically because if people feel guilty they may be unwilling or unable to learn about the sociological workings of society, which will likely reinforce them.

Comparison/Relation: Similar to Schwable’s sociological mindfulness, C. Wright Mills’ The Sociological Imagination discusses the distinction between personal troubles and public issues. Mills argued that in order to understand society, we must first understand our place in it. He emphasized the connection between individuals and society and insisted that we must know both to understand either one. This relates to Schwalbe because if people refuse to look at their place in society for fear of guilt or shame, they will never be able to understand society or themselves. Mills and Schwalbe describe mirror concepts and both suggest that we need to consider how our behaviors and actions are influenced by larger social structures. Further, both argue that people are often unaware of how they participate in something larger than themselves

Questions: How can people learn to move from individualist views of society to an awareness of the larger social context? How does privilege impact this? What benefit will critical sociological thinking have and for whom?

My research question will be formulated as follows :

    Topic                         :    Nurse-to-Patient Ratios
Research Question  :    How do nurse-to-patient ratios affect patient safety outcomes in acute care hospital settings?

    Additional ideas and Research Plans

In my research, I will examine evidence-based information on staffing legislation, patient mortality rates, hospital-acquired infections, and nurse burnout. I will investigate whether requiring specific staffing ratios leads to better patient outcomes compared to hospitals without these regulations. I will also look into the cost-effectiveness of these policies and their broader implications for healthcare policy. Some potential sub-questions I may consider include:

    · Do lower nurse-to-patient ratios help reduce medication errors?

    · How do staffing ratios influence nurse retention and job satisfaction?

    · What are the long-term financial effects of implementing safe staffing policies?

Here are the requirements for the Persuasive Research Paper:

    · Topic is related to healthcare and/or nursing

    · Minimum 10 pages in length (Counting the title pages and References section)

    · Cover page, in APA style

    · References page, in APA style

    · 3-5 scholarly sources cited in the body of the paper and listed in the References section, all in APA format

    · A clear, debatable, narrow thesis statement

    · Formatting according to APA guidelines for student papers

    · Double spaced, Times New Roman, 12pt font, 1-inch margins

    · Be in a
**Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx)** only. Submissions in any other format, such as PDF, will not be accepted. Please ensure you use the correct file type before submitting.
