    ## ENG 101: Researched Argumentative Synthesis Assignment

    ### Overview:

Use the writing process to write an argumentative, research-based, problem-solution essay of at least 1500 words and 7 paragraphs to convince readers to accept your point of view (your position on an issue). As stated in
_Easy Writer_, you want to write with a

specific purpose, “to make something happen in the world” (Lunsford 69).

    ### Due Dates:

See Assignment Calendar for specific due dates.

    ### Topic Choice

Identify a problem within a particular community, career field, or other context and argue that the problem can be solved/improved through storytelling.

    Sample communities/contexts for exploring problems:

    · Your prospective career (business, health services, real estate, counseling, etc.)

    · Parenting (or other family/mentoring relationships)

    · Cultural communities

    · Writing cover letters/interviewing

    · Other: ___________________

    ### Research:

This IS a research paper. Use a
    **minimum** of 5
    credible,
    scholarly sources.
**Two** (or more) of these sources should be from the York Tech online
**databases**, and another should be from the York Tech library or a local library, since you are required to use at least
**one print** source. Don’t forget that you must include correctly formatted in-text citations and a Works Cited page.

    ### Plagiarism:

Your essay will be automatically submitted to Turnitin to check for plagiarism when you submit your draft to D2L Dropbox. Plagiarized essays will earn a grade of 0. Please review the plagiarism policy as stated in the course syllabus.

    ### Length:

The essay must be 1500 words minimum, and include at least 7 paragraphs (a one-two paragraph introduction, at least three body paragraphs to support your claim, one-two rebuttal paragraphs to explain and refute opposition, and a conclusion).

    ### Format:

Use MLA 9 format for title, heading, citations, and the works cited page. Your works cited page must be included but does NOT count as part of the minimum word count.

    ### Word Choice:

Use third person point of view and a formal tone. Avoid using, slang, informal language, wordiness, and clichés. Include persuasive words such as should/should not, must, will, can, need to, etc.

    ### Grading:

Your essay will be graded using a rubric available on D2L in Dropbox.

    ### Format:

    #### **Introduction:**

Use the introduction to grab your reader’s attention and provide background information on the issue so your reader understands the basics of the topic. Keep your introduction objective. The introduction is not the place to start defending your point of view. Instead, use the introduction to explore the issue. Don’t assume your reader will be as knowledgeable as you about the topic. Be sure you thoroughly explain the context for writing and what the problem entails.

    #### **Thesis Statement:**

    Include your
**thesis statement (claim)** in the introduction. Your claim should express your position on the issue—in other words it should express the point of view you plan to defend in the essay. The thesis statement is a single declarative sentence that includes three main parts: the topic, the claim (your opinion), the reasons that support that claim (written as a “so” or “because” statement). Here is an example about an unrelated topic:

Gambling should not be legalized because it is destructive and addictive.

(The parts of the thesis do not need to appear in the same order as you see above.)

Notice that there is a clear position being argued and a clear reason (the “because” statement). Identifying only two points does not mean that I am limited to only two support paragraphs in the body of the essay. With regard to the “gambling” statement, I could devote 2 paragraphs to explaining how and to what extent gambling is destructive and spend two more explaining how and to what extent it is addictive. Keep in mind that this essay is not a five-paragraph essay. You need at least seven paragraphs, so think of this assignment as expanding on the basic five- paragraph format.

    #### **The Body:**

    The
**body** of the essay must consist of the following:

    At least
**three reasons** developed to support your position (though you can certainly include more reasons). These reasons must be supported by research. Using my “gambling” example, I might develop the following three reasons that support my claim:

    Destroys families

    Destroys careers

    Becomes an addiction

*Again: Each reason does not necessarily equate to one paragraph. You might devote multiple paragraphs to explaining one reason.*

    #### **Two opposing views:**

Consider one or two possible objections to your claim. Explain what those objections are. Refute (argue against) them. You can also use research in this part; however, it is not required.

    #### **The conclusion:**

Consider using your conclusion to emphasize your claim (do NOT repeat your thesis statement exactly). Give your essay a sense of closure by summing up main points and leave your reader with something to think about.

    #### **Editing:**

Each essay should go through a thorough self-editing process. Complete the essay draft in time to set it aside for 24 hours before you edit it. You will also have a peer edit your essay, and you should seriously consider bringing it to a tutor for help. (An online writing center is also available through NetTutor, which can be accessed through D2L).

    #### **TIPS:**

    1. Make sure you understand what you are expected to do. If you don’t understand, ask. If you are uncertain about whether your topic will work, then please discuss your proposal with me ahead of time.

    2. Choose an area to research you already have some knowledge about or that you are interested in. If the reading and writing that you do is personally meaningful and relevant to you, then you are more likely to do well on the assignment and to write persuasively.

    3. Start writing and reading about your topic as soon as you have chosen it.

    4. Remember, you are not writing a personal narrative. Try to make this essay objective. Avoid writing in first person (so
    **no** “I”, “me”, “my” or “I think…” “I feel…” “I believe…” “In my opinion…”)

    5. Make sure to use MLA format. For this essay, that means the student’s name, instructor’s name, course name/section number (ENG101-###), and the date should be in the top left corner of the first page (double-spaced), followed by the title centered on the page; page numbers (student’s last name plus the page number) in the top right corner of each page, and the essay should be double-spaced throughout.

    6. This
**IS** a research essay. You will need to spend some time actually reading and learning about your topic. Research materials you’ve chosen will need to be represented by in-text citations and a works cited page. On your works cited page, you should include ONLY those items that are cited in the essay. You must have 10-12 citations in the paper (minimum), and each of your sources needs to be cited at least twice.

    7. All essays will be checked for plagiarism. Plagiarized work (including self-plagiarized work – an essay you’ve submitted for another class, for example) will receive a zero.

    8. Revise, revise, revise! Writing is hard work, no doubt, but revision is where the real payoff is; remember, there are resources at the college available to you (academic coaches, tutors, my office hours).
