What are the legal and ethical considerations for pathology collection, and how these are applied in organisations?
Children in the workplace
Children technically under the age of 18. Ask family members for Medicare card. Parent guardian consent. Collector needs working with children check.
Duty of care
Provide standard of reasonable care to the patient. Following policy and procedure. Carrying the identification to the patient.
Informed consent
Informed consent ensures the protection of the patient against unwanted treatment. We will explain the procedure to the patient before we start. When a person freely signs a consent form confirming the procedure, it means they understood all the information.
Mandatory reporting
If the child is aggressive or abused, you should report to your supervisor and write down the report about what happened at that time.
Privacy, confidentiality and disclosure
Do not discuss the patient’s personal information with anybody and avoid disclosing all the information about the patient.
Records management
We need to have systematic records or complete the day sheet. We should keep secure the data in a safe place if we are going somewhere.
Work role boundaries
Boundaries of responsibilities: Respect by yourself and others. Avoid any type of arguments.
Sources of non-blood sample requests and interactions with other health services.
Work health and safety
Always keep in mind, our safety and patient’s safety is first during the procedure. If some blood fluid is on the floor, we can use a warning sign to prevent visitors from injury. We will use the equipment very safely such as needle and vacutainer.
