14. A man and a woman, both college students, have been living together off campus for three years. They have never considered marrying, and it has always been implicit in their relationship that each should be free to leave the other any time he or she wishes. Unexpectedly, the woman becomes pregnant. Because she is opposed to abortion, she resigns herself to having the child. When she is seven months pregnant, the man decides to leave her. One day when she is out shop-ping for groceries, he gathers his belongings, scribbles a hasty note (“Our relation-ship was beautiful while it lasted, but it’s over”), and leaves.

[ANSWERED] First, in the longer part of the paper, you should summarize the content of the article….
You will then write a 1000-1200-word summary of the article. Your paper should be organized into two main parts.[1]
First, in the longer part of the paper, you should summarize the content of the article.[2] This includes describing the author’s main thesis, as well as the supporting ideas Harris uses to develop the thesis. Your goal is that a reader who has never read the article would come away from your summary understanding the author’s argument.
Your paper should be coherent, with one idea flowing logically to the next, just as Harris logically develops his argument. In this part of the paper you may quote key passages of the work, but you should do so sparingly—in general, you should put the author’s arguments into your own words (but still cite appropriately). Given your word limits, you must pick and choose the author’s most important points. The most common error in this kind of paper is spending four pages on the first half of the author’s article, and then rushing inadequately through the remainder.
In the second part (much shorter) of the paper, you should evaluate the author’s work. What evidence does the author use? Is it adequate? Is his analysis sensible and does he use his evidence well? Is his argument persuasive to you? Your goal here is to decide if Harris successfully supported his argument(s) and to present your overall opinion of the article. Measured critiques are welcome, but we want to avoid surface-level criticism.
All written assignments for this course must be typed and double-spaced, in 12 pt font, with one-inch margins on all sides. Assignments must list the final word count at the beginning or end of the paper (e.g. “Word Count: XXXX”). All written work will be assessed for style, grammar, syntax, and spelling as well as content. Please use footnotes for citations, following the Chicago format, which can be found on the library resource website and using the example below.

In lieu of a traditional final exam, each student will write an eight-page term paper that applies different theoretical approaches to international relations to a topic of their choice. Through this assignment, students will apply concepts and frameworks from the course to a contemporary political issue while honing their analytical and research skills. Step 1: Choosing a Topic Paper Proposal due 9am, Monday, March 1 via Moodle (1 page) First, choose a topic that interests you! If you are looking for ideas, start by reading the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, or the Economist. Look at magazines and journals like Foreign Affairs and Foreign Policy. Listen to podcasts like the weekly international news roundup on Jenn White’s 1A. Talk to your friends, your family, and to me. Then, come up with a “why” question. Your paper should analyze why a phenomenon occurs (or fails to occur). For example: • Why has the international community failed to intervene to protect the Rohingya from ethnic cleansing in Myanmar? • Why do the United States and Russia appear to be on the verge of restarting an arms race? • Why has North Korea pursued a nuclear weapons capability? • Why is China pursuing the Belt and Road Initiative (a massive set of infrastructure-building projects) in Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Central Asia? Next, generate two competing hypotheses that answer your “why” question. These hypotheses should derive from different theoretical approaches (realism, liberalism, or constructivism) and/or be rooted in different levels of analysis (for example, state-level explanations like bureaucratic politics or the economic characteristics of the state or individual-level explanations like cognitive errors or influential individuals).
