Attention is a cognitive function that plays a central role in almost everything we do throughout the day. Based on this week’s readings, discuss the area/aspect of attention that you think is most important for or most influential on cognition. For example, when is vigilance or divided attention important for cognitive processing? Or how can unconscious processing influence our perception of an item? Be sure to support your opinions with specific terms and theories from the readings. How could you apply the ideas you have discussed to different settings, for example, in driving or advertising?
please follow and support the questions in detail.

Attention is choosing and processing a specific amount of information from all of the information that is being ernberg, 2017, p. 119). The four main areas of attention are signal detection and vigilance, search, selective attention and divided attention. Although they are each very important depending on the circumstances, selective attentions stands out to be the most important for cognition. For cognitive processes to happen, a person has to be able to pay attention to and focus on something for a certain amount of time.
There are several “filter and bottleneck” theories to help explain selective attention. A filter blocks some of the information going through, selecting only a part of it while the bottleneck slows down the information that is passing through (Sternberg & Sternberg, 2017, p. 128). This can be explained more with the Early Filter Model by Donald Broadbent which says that all information comes through and is stored in sensory memory for a very short period of time. It is then moved forward to a filter that will only allow one message to move forward again and be processed in more detail. From our short-term memory, we can pick and choose which information we want to keep and use later.
This is important for cognitive processing because if we were not able to selectively focus on certain information while other conversations around us are happening, it would be too hard to process the information and store it for later use. A weakness of this is that sometimes the information that is picked up on is due to the loudness, pitch, accent (Sternberg & Sternberg, 2017) or sometimes whatever information sounds more exciting versus what is more important. This is known as the cocktail party problem. For those who are not very good with divided attention, selective attention is very important when driving past an accident. At the same time, divided attention is more important for drivers than selective because there is always a lot to look out for while driving.

The two articles written by Niccolo Machiavelli and Pico Della Mirandola was set during the European
The two articles written by Niccolo Machiavelli and Pico Della Mirandola was set during the European Movement, Renaissance, during the fourteenth century until the sixteenth century. The renaissance movement was a period of reawakening or rebirth in culture after the dreadful events during the Middle Ages, also known as the dark ages. The text written by Niccolo Machiavelli, wherein he describes the most important character a ruler must possess, was a passage taken from his book, “The Prince. ” Machiavelli wrote the book in 1513.
On the other hand, the text written by Pico Della Mirandola, stating the image of man during the renaissance period, was also a passage taken from his book, “Oration on the Dignity of Man, in the Renaissance Philosophy of Men. ” Della Mirandola wrote the book in 1486. The passage taken from Machiavelli’s book is about a philosophical ideology that makes a description of what a ruler should acquire as a trait or character. In general, he asserts that a great and victorious leader is one who is able to infuse among his constituents.
Machiavelli puts forth a question where a conflict of choice arises, whether to be loved than feared, or to be feared than love. He chooses to be feared than to be loved. This was for the reason that there is no permanence in the acts of man, as it is shown in his nature. For Machiavelli, man is not to be trusted, despite the friendship between them. He foresees that when there is no imminent threat or danger that is about to happen, man stays loyal, helpful and compassionate. However, when danger ensues, man is likely to scamper away from you.
Furthermore, when man is feared, there would be an unceasing conscious effort from his constituents to avoid being punished or castigated. The passage taken from Mirandola’s book describes the characteristics of man during the renaissance movement. For him, man has in himself the liberty to choose whatever it is that he wants to choose. He shaped a philosophy patterned on a conversation between man and God saying that as it is in the beginning, God has given man the free will to choose whatever it is that he wants in his life.
The chapter of the book where both passages can be read is entitled “Europe in Transition. Taking into account that the writers have written their works during the renaissance movement, suggests that it depicts the culture and way of life of man during that historical period in Europe. It outlines philosophical ideologies that describe everything about the Renaissance man. Both passages take you into the world of the renaissance movement where philosophical beliefs have greatly varied since the dark ages and Europe’s transition into the period of renaissance. The basic tenet of the movement was humanism. The two passages are similar in the way that they both involve the liberty and freedom of man to choose who he wants to be.
Machiavelli puts you into a position where you choose between being loved or being feared, in the same way that Della Mirandola posits that man is free to choose the kind of life he wants to have. On the other hand, the difference between the two passages lies in their overall message. Machiavelli described leadership and the negativities of the nature of man. Della Mirandola asserts the realities of man wherein he is given the mind to think about his wants and needs and act on it accordingly. Furthermore, the effect of Machiavelli’s idea on the life of man opposes the philosophical view of Della Mirandola.
If a leader is feared, then his constituents would not be allowed the liberty or freedom to decide for themselves, however, the leader does this for them. The text from Machiavelli’s “The Prince” gives an overview for the study guide question I have written which is “Who is Machiavelli? ” Although it does not provide complete information about who Machiavelli is, it reveals his personality and ideals. To understand his philosophies and values, more specifically the political principle of the identity of a ruler, would lead you guessing about his entire personality based on this idea.
From reading the two passages, I have learned about the culture of way life during the renaissance movement. This movement respects the existence of man and upholds the welfare of society. Machiavelli’s description of a leader suggests that his view of the political system was a centralized form of government where a leader is feared and followed all through out. This was his way of controlling the unconstructive nature of man in order to channel their thoughts and energies into achieving the goals of society. From Della Mirandola’s text, I have learned that the renaissance movement values humanity and the right of man over his life.
The philosophies interconnected with the ideas of Della Mirandola during the renaissance proves that man is a valued member of society, as he, according to his desires and wishes, shapes the structure of the community. As I have already read a background pertaining to the cultural aspect of Europe during the renaissance from the two texts by Machiavelli and Della Mirandola, I would also want to further my knowledge by reading more about the philosophical ideologies from the great thinkers during that movement.
Their high regard for the existence of man is something that is to be praised during this movement, and reading more about it would satisfy my longings to fully immerse myself into the renaissance. With regards to the course, the texts I have read contributed in my understanding of historical people and events, Niccolo Machiavelli, Pico Della Mirandola, and the renaissance movement, and the influences they have on the present. Machiavelli, Della Mirandola, and the renaissance have helped in shaping the present state of the world as some countries and culture have adapted their ideologies and principles. -

1. In
Don Quixote
, Cervantes goes out of his way to make a point that the “story” was based on true facts and events when in fact it was not. Why do you think he does this? What is he trying to do to/for the reader by suggesting this? (Keep in mind that even as he says it is true, he is making us aware of the fact that it is not. So his point was NOT to make us actually think it was a true story!)
2. Chapter 8 is one of the funniest and most often referenced parts of the book. How does Don Quixote and the events of Chapter 8 r of the classic tales of the heroic knight.
