How do you use positive and negative numbers in your everyday life? Do you use positive and negative numbers at work?
Please give examples and feel free to include the stock market, investments, etc.
Please respond to my discussion questions by clicking on the Respond button after this section. When you reply to another student’s comments, click on Respond after their comments.
    EXAMPLE:
    Hello!
We use positive and negative numbers when we balance our checkbooks.
I think that cashiers may use positive and negative numbers more often than others may.
    OR
    Fractions…When will I use them?
One of the most common household uses of fractions is in food preparation.
Have you ever needed to make more of a certain food item? Explain how you might change the fractions in cooking when you double or triple or make 1/2 or 1/4 of a recipe.
Please share your favorite recipes while learning more about fractions!
Please give other examples of when you use fractions and why they are important.
    EXAMPLE:
    Hello!
I usually double my meatloaf recipe now. Using just the regular recipe just does not seem to hold us anymore. The recipe calls for 1 cup of breadcrumbs, 1 pound of meat, ¼ teaspoon of pepper, etc. I just double it to 2 cups of breadcrumbs, 2 pounds of meat, and ½ teaspoon of pepper.

You will have to prepare a “policy brief” as a final assignment for this course. It will help you explore in greater depth some of the key topics that we cover in class.
You will have to write the brief as if you are the Secretary of Health and I (Dr. Whembolua) am the Minister of Finance of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. You have to choose ONE among the 2 following different health problems (Malaria in Nigeria) and write an individual paper.
Your brief answers five questions that are central to policy making about global health:
    • Nature and Magnitude: What is the extent of this health problem?
    • Affected Populations: Who gets it?
    • Risk Factors: Why do they get it?
    • Economic and Social Consequences: Why should the Minister of Finance and the President care about this problem?
    • Priority Action Steps: What can we do at least cost and as fast as possible to address the issue and improve the health of our people?
The briefs begin with a summary paragraph – since the Minister of Finance is so busy that he has little time for more than the “30 second elevator speech.”
These briefs should be very concise, precise, and evidence-based. The briefs should use data and be well argued. Make sure to include more information on costs and on comparisons with other countries. It is an individual assignment; make sure you write it individually.
