Immigration policy is one of several hot button topics we will discuss. As mentioned before, many people tend to spout opinion rather than fact. In one of my high school Government classes, I asked the students what they knew about Arizona’s SB1070. One student stated, “It’s that law against Mexicans.” I said “Really?” I put the law upon the overhead and pointed to the screen and said “oh, right, there it is, ‘whenever you see a Mexican driving down the street, stop him and harass him.’” My sarcasm was obvious. What it said was if a person was detained after being stopped for an infraction, if they had no ID and were unable to communicate, the officer could inquire about their immigration status. After the class researched the issue and debated it, most ended up agreeing with the law, especially all the students who immigrated here legally. The point was that regardless of whether you agree with it or not, at least know what you are talking about. If you haven’t already, look at the different viewpoints on the immigration issue with an open mind and compare it to your own. Comment as you see fit. Min 50 words or more
