Think of at least three areas of criminological research
where you believe much research has been done —for example, understanding why
some people engage in crime. Where are you likely to find such studies? You may
wish to start by looking on ERIC, in JSTOR, and in Criminal Justice Abstracts—
whichever data base your library has. Do a literature search for this
substantive area of inquiry with the words and mixed methods to find out about
recent research on the topic that has utilized mixed methods. What do you find?
Did mixing methods enhance the findings?

Find a research article that used both qualitative and
quantitative research data (you can find articles on the Student Study Site:
http://edge.sagepub.com/bachmanprccj7e). Make a list of the ways that you think
the collection of qualitative data enhanced the findings and interpretations of
quantitative data. Try to find some potential interpretations of the
quantitative data that would have been incorrect if it were not for the
additional insights garnered from the qualitative data.

Find the website for the online Journal of Mixed Methods
Research (http://mmr.sagepub.com). On the home page, click the button “Current
Issue.” When the table of contents for the current issue comes up, click on the
abstracts for three of the articles, and for each article, write down two or
more methods that the authors used to conduct their research. Were any methods
used in more than one study? Were there any methods you had never heard of
    before?

Go to the home page of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research
and click on “Most Read.” When the most-read article titles come up, read the
abstracts for the top five articles. What themes or main points do you see
running through these articles? Based on the top five abstracts, write a
paragraph or two describing the most important issues currently being discussed
    or investigated by mixed-methods researchers.

You learned in this book that Sampson and Raudenbush (1999)
had observers drive down neighborhood streets in Chicago and record the level
of disorder they observed. What should have been the observers’ response if
they observed a crime in progress? What if they only suspected that a crime was
going to occur? What if the crime was a drug dealer interacting with a driver
at a curb? What if it was a prostitute soliciting a customer? What, if any,
ethical obligation does a researcher studying a neighborhood have to residents
in that neighborhood? Should research results be shared at a neighborhood forum
    or community meeting?

Some research investigating the effects of alcohol has
actually had research subjects drink to the point of intoxication. If you were
a student member of your university’s Institutional Review Board, would you
vote to approve a study such as this? Why or why not? Would you ban an
experiment that involves alcohol altogether, or would you set certain criteria
for the experimental conditions? What would such criteria be? What about for
female students who may be pregnant? Can you think of any circumstances in
which you would allow an experiment involving the administration of illegal
    drugs?

We won’t be able to do anything with mixed-methods data in
the sense that we mix qualitative and quantitative data, as such an analysis is
not well suited to SPSS and is very labor intensive. What we can do is look
into triangulating and replicating findings across multiple datasets with
similar measures. For this exercise, we’ll look at whether there are any race
and gender differences in smoking and drinking behaviors.
    1. Why would we want to compare results across multiple
    datasets?
    2. Does this allow us to establish (1) causal relationships,
    (2) that measures are reliable, or (3) the validity of a measure? Why or why not?

The MTF dataset is for tenth-grade students specifically,
so you will need to make sure that the 2013 YRBS data has only tenth graders
selected as well. To do this, go to “data->select cases->if” and enter
“grade=2” into the field. After this is done, we’ll look into answering our
    questions:
    1. First, tabulate the YRBS variables qn33 and qn43, and the
    MTF variables past30cigs and past30drink.
    2. Do these two datasets agree on the incidence rates of
drinking and smoking? If not, can you think of any reasons they wouldn’t agree?
