This week we will explore and respond to two narratives: “Learning the Language,” by Perri Klass, ( https://www.nytimes.com/1984/10/04/garden/hers.html ) and “On Dumpster Diving,” by Lars Eighner ( https://scholarworks.umb.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1539&context=nejpp ). As you read, notice how both authors navigate presenting a narrative while shifting into an examination of the broader implications of their experiences.
After reading Klass’ essay, ask yourself what are some areas (jobs, hobbies, clubs, sports, etc.) of your life in which you utilize specialized language? Use your journal to list some examples of the vocabulary that an outsider might find unfamiliar.
After reading Eighner’s essay, answer the following reading response questions:
Describe your initial reaction to this essay, and explain what about the essay caused this reaction. For example, if you were surprised, what specifically did you find surprising?
As Eighner analyzes the contents of the dumpsters, he also analyzes the motives of the people who threw these things away. How do these two levels of analysis shape the essay and contribute to its theme?
How many different types of scavengers does Eighner identify? Describe how they are different and what they have in common.
Eighner’s polished use of language and his vocabulary are sophisticated, giving the impression of an educated and intelligent person. To what extent is this consistent with your previous image of what most homeless people are like?
This essay is powerful in part because of Eighner’s vivid use of detail. Choose any part of the essay describing in detail the contents of dumpsters, and identify in his description the words that most successfully evoke sensory details (visuals, smells, sounds, tastes, or physical sensations).

It is always a good idea to know the background of a student and their families. But we must also remember that just because a family is a certain way does not always mean that the student will be like that or vice versa. Sometimes you will have parents that think that there is nothing wrong with their child or that they can do no wrong. We must also remember that just because a student may have a disability does not mean that they can not be taught. These will be your kids that will learn the most, but in different ways than others. Also, remember that if a child is non-verbal does not mean that they can not communicate with you. There are many different ways for them and you and also their families to learn how to communicate with each other. This is a good way to get to learn all of your kids and parents on a more personal level and be able to help each other when needed.comment as you see fit. Min 40 words or more

The goal of the development of literacy is for students to read to learn. Reading comprehension depends on language abilities, which have been developing since birth. The understanding of vocabulary and their relationship to the sentence within the text. This all relates back to prior knowledge and the experiences the students have. “Through its research the NEL discovered that the more complex aspects of oral language, including syntax, grammar, complex measures of vocabulary and listening, are clearly related to reading comprehension.” (Shanahan & Lonigan, Pa. 5, 2017) Ultimately, readers need to translate print into language and then interpret the meaning of the language.
