    Writing Exercise
    Choose
    one
of the following assignments (A or B)
    A: Multiple Viewpoints
In this assignment, you will apply your understanding of the fiction compositional element of character.
Pick an event from your past or create an event that you want to write about. There must be multiple characters involved in the event you identify.
Utilizing the multiple perspectives, experiment with writing about the event from at least three different viewpoints.
For example, if I choose to write about a car accident, I’d write a paragraph from the driver’s perspective in the car. I’d write a paragraph from the perspective of the person who rear-ended him while texting. Lastly, I’d write a paragraph from the perspective of the elderly gentleman sitting on a park bench across the street who witnessed the whole thing. Be aware of how you are employing the first four steps of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, and proofreading.
Challenge yourself to look at the various ways in which each viewpoint might be different. How can you accentuate certain aspects from each individual viewpoint? If you decide to use an event from your past as inspiration, remember that you’re not bound to that reality. You are NOT writing a nonfiction piece here where you are more responsible for the actual event. What you’re doing is using your actual experience as an inspirational springboard for imagining and developing a fictional experience. Don’t feel confined by what really happened; allow what really happened to release your imagination.
    B: The “What if” Game
How to overcome writer’s block? Here is an exercise to get you warmed up and writing.
Imagine “What if?” For example, what if your sister developed the ability to fly? Would you be jealous or proud? How would you explain her to friends? Or what if all the dogs of the world rebelled against their masters on the same day? Write a list of “what ifs.” Be inventive, have fun, and there is no limit to your imagination for this.
Once you have the list, choose one and write for ten minutes exploring a scene in which this event came true. When completed, revise to a second draft, strengthen word choice, imagery, and thematic elements.
