Telecommunications, the Internet, and Wireless Technology

Telecommunications, networks, and wireless technology are now introducing fundamental changes in
business. The opening case in Chapter 7, “The National Hockey League Scores with Wireless Technology,”
demonstrated that digital technology was essential for attracting and retaining athletes, broadcasters, fans,
    and sponsors.

NHL hockey has a large fan base, that are attuned to digital media. So to keep them engaged, Management
turns to wireless networking technology and the Internet of Things (IoT). The NHL is thus able to provide real-
time game statistics, and content for TV broadcasts and streaming to mobile devices. Not only that they are
able to increase the popularity of the sport and fans’ interest, they are also able to expand their fan base and
    increase revenue.

Wireless networking and sensor technology provides NHL with powerful capabilities and opportunities. The
speed and position of players as well as the hockey puck, along with other important information are tracked
and delivered instantaneously to team management, fans, and broadcasters.

Telecommunications, the internet, and wireless technology provided fans with increased involvement in the
sport by allowing them to view the data on their televisions and mobile apps, and providing viewers with the
ability to discuss the results on social media. Since the data was made available through digital and social
media, viewership of the sport has soared. This is an excellent example of how businesses are adapting to
new technologies based on the internet. As technology improves, businesses must continually evolve.

In addition to Wi-Fi, another popular wireless technology is Bluetooth. Bluetooth is a wireless networking
standard that is used to link up devices within a 10-meter area using low-power, radio-based communication.
Bluetooth technology is used in a small personal area such as within a home environment or in a car. For

example, Bluetooth connects wireless keyboards and mice to PCs or cell phones to car audio systems
    without wires.

Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMax) is a new wireless technology that caters to rural
areas and locations that do not have access to fixed broadband connectivity or Wi-Fi. WiMax has a wireless
access range of up to 31 miles and transmission speed of 30–40 Mbps, and up to 1 Gbps for fixed stations
(Laudon & Laudon, 2022). These new high-speed services have extended Internet access to numerous
locations that could not be covered by traditional wired internet services and have made ubiquitous computing
    a reality.

    Networks and Telecommunications

Most of us know what a network is, even if it might be hard to describe. Simply, a network is a way to connect
two or more computer devices together. As they grow, they get more complicated, but it is the same basic
concept. Now, you have to add switches and routers into the mix so that something manages the data that is
    flowing around.

To communicate, we must have some sort of rules or a protocol. The main protocol is Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), which allows for computers to talk to each other even if they are on
completely different platforms. We have IP addresses so that data can find the way to us. Our IP address
system is even evolving. Our current system (e.g., 123.1.1.1) is changing to IPv6 (with more than a quadrillion
    possible addresses).

Organizations also have internal intranets for employees to use. This keeps their data separate from the
outside world. Organizations may also use a virtual private network (VPN), which is a secure, encrypted
private network. Can you imagine where this might be beneficial? Consider those employees who log into
    their work remotely.

All of this has led to other types of growth areas. The website has advanced due to speed capabilities offered
by the Internet and improved media. People want their information now. Many people will only wait a matter of
seconds for a webpage to load before moving on to another website. This puts an amazing strain on
businesses to constantly keep up with current technologies. What do you think?

Additionally, the trend for websites has evolved to be more social. Customers are encouraged to leave
feedback. They can post pictures or videos of themselves and the product. Once again, technology has to
evolve to allow for this functionality.

Where do you imagine technology will be 10 years from now?

    Information Systems Security

Most people understand the value of having a secure working environment. Not only is information technology
(IT) concerned with the physical security of its assets (e.g., laptops, computers, printers, servers), but it also
has to be concerned with virtual security.

Below are some questions to ask ourselves.

    • How do we keep our biggest asset, our data, safe from thieves?
    • How do we control access to our systems and keep the hackers out?
    • How do we keep out networks safe from an attack so that we can maintain business continuity?
    • How can we possibly keep up with all of the risks?

Organizations today are constantly dealing with these issues. Networks are separated to allow access only to
those who need it. Firewalls are installed, and antivirus software (as well as other types of security
applications) must be kept up-to-date. Vulnerabilities can come from the Internet in the form of a Denial-of-
Service (Dos) attack. E-mail can contain bad attachments. We have all heard of malware. Malware is
malicious software that includes viruses, worms, Trojan horses, Structured Query Language (SQL) injection
    attacks, ransomware, spyware, and keyloggers.

    Title

Thieves and hackers are developing new ways to hack into systems all of the time. Ask any large company
security professional, and they will tell you that people are sniffing their networks every day and looking for
    vulnerabilities.

More and more, we have seen a proliferating of a malware known as ransomware. Cybersecurity Ventures
estimated the global cost of ransomware attacks is $20 billion in 2021 and will approach $265 billion by 2031
(Morgan, 2021). Attackers try to extort money from their victims by taking control of their systems, encrypting
the data, and demanding a high ransom pay to end the hack. For example, in 2019, an attacker used a
ransomware called Sodinokibi to infiltrate 22 Texas cities and held them hostage for millions of dollars
(Fruhlinger 2020). You can get ransomware from downloading an infected attachment, clicking a link inside
an email, or visiting the wrong website.

Not only can security threats come from the outside, but they can occur on the inside. Think of the disgruntled
employee who wants to sell the latest trade secrets of the company. Think of the employee with a gambling
addiction who wants to figure out a way to skim money from the company. Some employee threats are not
even malicious. The software developer may accidentally place a vulnerability into the system by not adding
the correct security into an internal software application.

Business Value of a Secure System

Think of recent news items, such as the Target credit card breach. It is just bad publicity for one thing, but
allowing people’s money to be stolen is never good for business. The hard truth is that breaches like the one
that Target had can cost companies millions of dollars. All of that stolen money has to be paid back. Credit
cards have to be replaced, which come with a large fee from the bank. There are fines that have to be paid as
well. The company is ultimately liable and has to pay all of those charges.

The compliance or business value side of this involves the Sarbanes-Oxley Act regulations for record
retention and data integrity. The credit card section includes payment card industry (PCI) compliance. If you
do not pass PCI compliance, then as a business, you will not be allowed to accept credit cards. The Gramm-
Leach-Bliley Act of 1999 also calls for security and confidentiality of data. The Health Insurance Portability
and Accountability Act (HIPAA) deals with medical security and privacy.

Businesses have to adhere to governmental laws for data security, or they will find themselves in a legal
predicament. Legal predicaments just mean one thing to most organizations: “This is going to cost us money.”
For this reason, companies in the last 10 years or so have added security and compliance to their ongoing
strategic initiatives. Many companies will hire outside risk-assessment teams to evaluate their potential
physical and virtual risks. Also, this means adding yet another item to the annual budget. Nowadays,
organizations need security teams and security software that will monitor systems and either detect or prevent
threats. E-mail and Internet usage has to be logged, and network activity has to be monitored and logged. Not
only is that software costly, but they need servers and databases to store the data and the applications. From
a legal standpoint, a company has to be able to respond to any legal request for information. Electronic
records management is very important to contingency planning.

    Management of Information System Controls

An organization has to know where its risks and vulnerabilities are located. Security controls need to be put in
place to protect the data and the systems. Organizations also have to develop security policies. In addition to
security policies, there are acceptable use policies that define the acceptable use of a company’s information-
    based assets and computing equipment.

There are different types of information system controls. All of these controls and policies make up an
organization’s security framework. There are two information system controls: general controls and
application controls. There are six types of general controls: software controls, hardware controls, computer
operations controls, data security controls, implementation controls, and administrative controls. There are
three types of application controls: input controls, processing controls, and output controls.

In addition to an organization’s policies and controls, there will usually be an internal and external auditing
function. Internal auditors try and catch any security and control issues before the external auditors are let

    Title

loose. Amazingly, an organization is required to hire external auditors to (hopefully) put their stamp of
approval on the organization’s systems, controls, documentation, and procedures.

Other parts of risk assessments, controls, and policies include disaster recovery and business continuity.
Disaster recovery involves the creation and implementation of a plan to restore the IT side of the business
when there has been some type of disruption. A server that goes bad may failover to a server stored in
another city that houses the servers. The disaster recovery center will likely be an exact duplicate of the
existing operational data center. A business continuity plan will hold all of the information pertinent to getting
the business up and running again in case of an emergency. Can you see how disaster recovery and
    business continuity go hand-in-hand?

    Summary

In summary, no single method to securing information systems is enough. Businesses must incessantly
upgrade their security software to outsmart hackers and computer criminals.

    Unit Lesson

What Is Information Technology (IT) Infrastructure?

IT infrastructure includes the shared technology resources that provide the platform supporting our
information system applications. An IT infrastructure includes seven major components: consultants and
system integrators, computer hardware platforms, data management and storage, enterprise software
applications, networking and telecommunications technology, Internet platforms, and operating system
platforms. As you can see, there is more to a firm’s IT infrastructure than just hardware and software. IT
infrastructure includes everything technical that supports the business. It supports both the business and IT
    strategies.

Think of it this way: If our strategy is to offer our customer a specific service such as electronic invoicing
(EDI), how can we do that without the infrastructure in place to carry out that goal? The IT infrastructure in this
case is the EDI software, the hardware (i.e., a server, database, and the Internet), the personnel, the
educational services, the management services, and so on.

    Evolution of IT Infrastructure

How has IT infrastructure evolved over time? Most of us have a sense of the answer to this question. It is
enormous! Just look at computers—the first ones were huge. Businesses used mainframes that were the size
of trucks, and now servers are the size of a desktop.

Simple applications of the past have now become suites, or bundles of applications that can work together.
Now, there are enterprise-level applications that help improve an organization’s productivity and efficiency via
a collection of programs with common business applications. They are designed to be customizable to solve
enterprise-wide problems rather than personnel or departmental problems.

In addition, there are newly emerging enterprise-level tools such as enterprise database management
software. Again, enterprise-level tools take the already existing tools to a different level to answer the need for
    more storage and enterprise-wide sharing.

Years ago, dialing into the Internet meant using a slow modem. Now, businesses can use fiber-optic and
wireless technologies. In the past, for small- to medium-sized organizations, many of the emerging
technologies were out of reach and were mostly cost prohibitive. Now, these businesses can turn to the cloud
and service providers to gain access to technologies that were previously out of reach.

The video below displays how an industrial manufacturer, Microsoft, and the Internet of Things (IoT) combine
to provide innovative improvements to the worldwide oil and gas supply chain.

View the video Rockwell Automation Fuels the Oil and Gas Industry with IoT. (A transcript of the video is
available within the YouTube player by clicking on the three dots below the video title on the right. Closed-

    Current Trends in Technology

We just mentioned one trend, which is cloud computing. Cloud computing offers many on-demand services.
One good example is software as a service (SaaS). This service allows the customer to take advantage of
highly beneficial applications via a yearly subscription fee rather than paying a large purchase cost. Cloud
computing helps businesses reduce their IT overhead costs while making their systems more efficient by
offering access to computing capacity that many small- to medium-sized businesses might not be able to
    afford.

Let’s examine the opening case in Chapter 5, “American Airlines Heads for the Cloud.” In this scenario,
American Airlines needed to upgrade their IT to improve customer service and remain competitive. However,
instead of upgrading its own IT infrastructure and develop the new applications the traditional way (on
premise computing center), the company decided it would be more cost-effective to use cloud computing.
This decision meant that the company did not need to invest heavily in its own IT infrastructure or in the
personnel needed to develop and maintain it. By migrating a portion of their systems to IBM cloud services,
the company was able to get up and running in half the time and for less cost had they chosen to upgrade
their own IT infrastructure. The new systems significantly improve system performance and reliability and
    reduce end-user response time.

Another benefit to cloud computing is that the cloud service is scalable, which means that as the company
grows, the cloud services can grow with it.

Although there seems to be advantages for using cloud services, there are also some disadvantages. Even
though users can access data via the cloud from just about anywhere, there are security risks for many
businesses and concerns about the transfer of IT responsibilities to a third party. For example, how well does
the vendor monitor security threats? How fast do they respond to issues? How often does the vender have
downtime? There are many things to consider when transferring IT responsibilities to a third party.

Virtualization is another recent trend. Many organizations are moving their physical servers to a virtual
platform rather than being restricted by the physical restraints of the server box. In a virtual world, you can
assign resources dynamically, and all of the servers on a host share the whole.

Another recent trend is wearable technology—devices that contain multiple sensors that can track a variety of
activities. For example, a fitness tracker can track the number of steps a person walks and their heart rate,
and it can track how long they performed the activity. There are a variety of wearable technologies such as
fitness trackers, smartwatches, smart jewelry, smart clothing, implantables, and head-mounted displays.

Wearable devices in business can help increase employee productivity by providing information instantly
without the user having to interrupt whatever task he or she is working on. This type of technology is helping
businesses better understand their employees and their customers by learning about what they do every day,
what they do to stay healthy, where they go, and how they feel. There are many benefits to wearable

technology, but there are also concerns about privacy and about how the sensitive data are used by
    businesses.

    Business Intelligence (BI)

Suppose you have over 100 small candy stores across the United States. You want to collect data about
pricing changes from the vendors and information about marketing trends. Then, you might also want to
collect information from external sources like your competitor data or demographic data.

How would you store this information? Well, you will store it in a data warehouse. Data warehouses are a part
of your BI infrastructure. It is through this infrastructure that you can use tools like analytics and data mining to
look for patterns in your data that you cannot see by just looking at query or report results.

The first analytical method is online analytical processing (OLAP), which allows the user to view data in
different ways by using different dimensions. This is commonly referred to as using a data cube. How could
this be used for our example? Well, we could pull information on the best-selling candy bar, the average price,
and the day of the week and the month of the year when the most candy bars are sold. Would that get us
closer to knowing what kind of discount offers to put in our stores? It would, but this would not provide us with
    enough information.

The next common analytical method is data mining. Data mining is more complex and looks for hidden
patterns and relationships. Again, let’s apply this to our previous example. The results of our data mining
could show us the best-selling candy bar, the average price, and the day of the week and month of the year
when we sell the most candy bars. It may also tell us that the majority of the time that people buy candy bars
is when they also buy a soda or coffee. Now, what can our marketing department do with that information?
They can bundle products together and advertise them in the store windows and at the gas pumps: “Buy a
soda and candy bar, and you can get 50 cents off.”

This is a simple example. Just imagine the rows of data that retailers like Amazon.com have stored in
databases and data warehouses! Now, there are Web mining tools that help organizations understand
customers’ Internet patterns, including which websites they frequent, what they buy, what they do not buy,
and how long they spent on the websites. All of this is large data, and it is valuable data.

Let’s take a look at the opening case in Chapter 6, “Domino’s Pizza Masters Data One Pizza at a Time.” In
this example, we can see that data can be difficult to access and analyze if systems are not configured
properly. The company had millions of records with data from nearly 15,000 outlets in 70 countries serving
millions of pizzas each year, but they were not able to organize the data to be analyzed because much of the
data was in 85,000 different internal and external unintegrated sources (Marr, 2018, as cited in Laudon &
    Laudon, 2022).

By implementing a data warehouse, the company was able to consolidate the data from the various
repositories to a single location. Consolidating the data makes it much easier to access and manipulate into
usable information. With its new data warehouse, the company now has a single, consistent source of data to
use to create one-to-one buying experiences across multiple points of interaction with customers and to drive
the growth of individual stores and franchise groups.

    Summary

Organizations can make big decisions based on their data. They pay a huge amount of money to store and
analyze the collected data. As an IT professional, it is your job to protect the data and to help ensure data
quality and integrity. There are several concepts—other than the ones previously mentioned—that are also
important to this field. The most important involve the need for organizations to set effective information
policies and to have adequate data governance across the enterprise. We will cover more on these topics in a
    future lesson.

    My topic is Retail.

During the Great Depression Retail was affected the most, this era had the biggest impact on how Americans shopped. Many people lost their jobs and earned less money therfore they spend less money and "cut corners" or "make do". They would sew at home or buy at thrift stores to keep up their appearance. Many local small stores closed down and the stores that stayed open had to lower their costs, promote bargains and focus on selling affordable goods. This was a major transformation in shopping which caused Americans to be very careful with their money for a long time. The New Deal Era was a temporary adjustment, that is when the economy started to stabilize. It wasnt a pause but more of a steady recovery. The Government introduced regulations on business practices, labor and prices which changed how retail operated. Federal policies helped create jobs and raised income which led people to feel more comfortable to spend money again, they started shopping but because the Depression shock shoppers were wary and shopped conservativly which also led retailers to focus on value and savings. Early World War II mobilization casued a short term shift, shortage of goods and limited choices were available but only for a short period during the war. Factories shifted to war productions and stopped making everyday consumer products. The governmet had control over what and how much people could buy. Once the war ended in 1946 Americans returned to normality fairly quickly but in stages not overnight in the course of 2-4 years.

My personal learning objective focuses on
political movements and their responses to national crises. During the Great Depression, political movements grew stronger as people demanded change due to unemployment, poverty, and economic instability. Many Americans began to question capitalism and supported movements pushing for labor rights, government reform, and social welfare. During the New Deal era, political movements shifted as the federal government became more involved in everyday life through programs like Social Security and labor protections. Some movements supported these changes, while others opposed what they saw as too much government power.

The New Deal period had the greatest impact on political movements because it transformed how citizens interacted with the federal government. For the first time, large numbers of Americans organized around federal policies rather than just local or state issues. This change was not temporary but marked the beginning of a long-term shift toward mass political activism. A major pivot point was the expansion of labor unions and grassroots organizing, which continued to influence politics even after World War II began

Select a specific health care organization and identify its mission statement and a current organizational initiative. As the leader of the HR department, you have been asked to deliver a presentation to the organization's executive team on the need to create a new team or department to staff the strategic initiative that is in alignment with the mission statement. Part of your presentation should provide the steps for budget approval and progress of the decision-making process. Include the following in your 10-12 slide presentation:

    1. Describe the mission statement and strategic initiative for the health care organization you selected.

    2. Explain the role of this organization's mission statement and strategic initiative (i.e., implementing an organization-wide technology adaptation within a 2-year period).

    3. List all positions that would be a part of the new department or team.

    4. Describe the appropriate wage for each position considering the local region of the health care organization selected. Explain how the individual wages must be budgeted for and what considerations will need to be included.

    5. Describe the budgeting decisions and wage offerings needed to approve filling positions. Include team size and annual budget considerations.

    6. If labor is 60% of the budget, discuss training, equipment, meeting areas, and other resources needed to become operational. Describe a few of the tools and techniques that could have been employed during the decision-making process.

Include a title slide and speaker notes. Ensure all references are in the speaker notes of the final “Questions” slide in as close to APA format as practical.

    **## Home-Care-Scenario.pdf**

    HOME CARE Scenario

    Type of care provided

    Scenario

Care in this capacity can range from a short-term to long-term based upon the changing needs of the
patient. Patient age can range from pediatric to elderly. Care can be provided in the patient’s private
home, group home, or assisted living setting. Medical homes fall into this category and are a new focus
of Accountable Care Organizations through the Affordable Care Act of 2010.

What steps would you, as the Director of Human Resources, take to rectify this issue ($5.00/hr raise)?

    Instruction
In your capacity as the Director of Human Resources, develop a plan for how you would conduct an
internal and external wage analysis of your organization and respond to the impact this would have on
    the organization.

As the Director of Human Resources within a home care environment, you are responsible for the ad-
ministration of the organization’s labor budgets. Your Director of Clinical Services, who has a MSN, has
presented some challenges regarding the compensation of her staff.

This specific assisted nursing facility focuses on long-term care, providing approximately 500 nursing
and support personnel (83 RN's and 417 Caregivers/CNA's) who deliver direct and indirect care to
approximately 225 patients representing various stages of acuity and need for nursing care. Your
overall labor budget represents approximately 60% of expense revenue.

The Director of Clinical Service complains that several of her registered nurses are threatening to leave
the organization, allegedly because a competitor nearby pays their nurses higher wages. In fact, Direc-
tor of Clinical Service asks for an across-the-board immediate pay adjustment of an additional $5.00 an
hour for the nurses. She is awaiting a response from you before the day is over.

In a total of 250-500 words, respond to the question located in the Home Care scenario.

    **## HealthCareOrganizationalPlanning.docx**
