    ACADEMIC WRITING

    Case Assignment

Note: Module 1 SLP should be completed before the Module 1 Case.

After viewing “An Education in Equality,” “Learning Begins at Home,” “A Military Education,” and “an Education,” write an organized and well-supported essay in which you make three observations about education and what impacts (and enhances) student learning. Consider impacts and influences such as parenting, home life, society, race, technology, ethnicity, socioeconomics, etc.

A well-organized essay has a beginning, middle, and an end. The beginning, or introduction, should include an opening sentence to grab your reader’s attention. Follow the opening sentence with a brief background on the topic or situation. In this case, it might be the state of education today. The last sentence of the introduction is the thesis statement. The thesis states the main point of the essay, which in this case, would be what impacts/influences student learning.

A well-supported essay includes supporting points, details, and examples. For this essay, you must decide the best way to organize the body of the paper. Will you have a paragraph for each impact or enhancement? Will you divide the body of your paper into three paragraphs, one for each impact? In any case, each body paragraph must support (explain) your reasoning (rationale) using specific details. Each body paragraph must begin with a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph.

The conclusion typically summarizes the main points of the essay and/or closes with a lasting impression that connects the reader to their world. You may wish to offer suggestions to reader about what makes for exceptional student learning.

Be sure to proofread your essay and edit for proper grammar, punctuation, diction (word choice), and spelling, as errors in sentence skills will lower a final grade. A grade will be determined based on the Module 1 Case expectations and the Trident University General Education rubric for English found in the course syllabus.

Papers must be double-spaced in Times or Times New Roman font (12 cpi) with standard one-inch margins. A grade will be determined based on the Module 1 Case expectations and the Trident University General Education rubric for English.

The first person “I” is not used in a formal essay.

No secondary sources are to be used in the process of writing this first paper; it is to be entirely written based on one’s point of view and supported with body points and details.

    Assignment Expectations

Write an essay (no less than four pages in length) that states an original thesis statement on what impacts/influences student learning.

Demonstrate the ability to write clearly and cohesively when expressing one’s ideas and/or intended purpose.

Demonstrate the ability to clearly state and support a thesis in an organized and cohesive essay.

    Discussion: Quantitative Research Designs

In order to find the best information on a topic, not only should you develop a question and search for resources, but you should also know how to analyze the value of the resources that you identify. There are different ways to evaluate resources, such as using the hierarchy of evidence, which you explored in Week 4 of this course. Another way to evaluate resources is to consider the appropriateness of the research design. Understanding how research designs contribute to the quality of a study is essential for being able to analyze resources when conducting a literature review or locating evidence for practice.

    ORDER A PLAGIARISM-FREE PAPER NOW

In this Discussion, you consider the different research designs and evaluate how these designs have been used to research a specific topic. You also consider strategies for selecting an appropriate research design.

    To prepare:

Review the information in the course texton quantitative research designs. Focus on the information in Box 9.1, “Guidelines for Critiquing Research Designs in Quantitative Studies” located on page 210 of the course text.

Select a topic from the list below and search the Walden Library to find two different quantitative research studies addressing that issue:

    Caregiver stress

    Anxiety in children

    Sleep apnea

    Depression in college freshmen

    Rural health care issues

    Post-traumatic stress syndrome

    Traumatic brain injury in veterans

    Health effects of environmental contaminants

    Bipolar disorder

    End-of-life ethical issues

    Alternative medicine

For each of the sources that you select, identify the type of quantitative research design used, and evaluate whether it is the most appropriate approach to the research. Quantitative Research Designs: Dr. Kristen Mauk – Quantitative research for evidence-based practice

Consider the ramifications of choosing an inappropriate design for a research study.

    By Day 3

Post the topic you selected, references for the two sources you identified, and the quantitative research design used in each. Critique the appropriateness of the design used and justify your comments with information from the Learning Resources. Discuss the ramifications of choosing an inappropriate design for a research study.

NARRATOR: Quantitative research includes any study or project that involves

the use of numerical data or information that can be described using numbers.

But having an effective research design is critical for the validity and success of

all quantitative research ventures. In this video, Doctor Kristen Mauk speaks

about the design of her DNP project, which explored the effect of education on

new nurses in a rehabilitation unit.

Doctor Mauk’s project can be considered a quantitative study, because it

involved comparing the numerical results from tests that nurses completed

before and after receiving educational materials, and then performing statistical

tests to check for significance in the findings.

KRISTEN MAUK, PHD: I found a unit that was nearby, and they had opened a

brand new rehab unit. And I collaborated with the nurse manager to see what

would be the best methods for them to learn. And she said that her rehab staff

didn’t really have a lot of training specifically in rehab. They were experienced,

wonderful nurses, but they were opening a new unit.

Well, my background was rehab, and I decided, ooh, well here was a good

problem. Would education make a difference in their knowledge about

rehabilitation? So that was my question. I designed, in collaboration with the

nurse manager and the administration and using all those techniques about

being a change agent, and communication, and people skills, we designed a

    project that fit that unit.

So first I went to the literature and found that, yes, knowledge makes a

difference. If you’re educating nurses, yes, they will– if you give them education,

that will result in better knowledge. So I designed a pre- and post-test using a

tool that was already in existence to measure rehab knowledge. And I took 15

basic competencies of rehabilitation as set forth by the Association of

Rehabilitation Nurses. Quantitative Research Designs: Dr. Kristen Mauk – Quantitative research for evidence-based practice

  • Case Study Marsha and Clement are both carriers of sickle cell disease, a disease that is autosomal recessive

Case Study 1  Marsha and Clement are both carriers of sickle cell disease, a disease that is autosomal recessive. Their first child, Amelia, does not have the disease. Marsha and Clement are planning another pregnancy, but they are concerned about their second child having the condition. Clement’s dad died from complications of sickle cell disease shortly before Amelia was born.  1.Draw a Punnett square to determine the likelihood of Marsha and Clement having a baby with sickle cell disease. What is the chance the baby will be a carrier of the disease, just like the parents? 2.Marsha suggested to the nurse at the local family planning clinic that if the baby were a boy he might have a higher risk for developing the disease, just like his grandfather. If you were this Practitioner, how would you respond? 3.When Amelia, who does not have sickle cell disease, grows up and marries someone who does have the disease, how likely is it that her children will have the disease?

    [PEOPLE SOCIALIZING AT PARTY]

MALE SPEAKER: Hey there. How you feeling?

    FEMALE SPEAKER: I’m drunk.

MALE SPEAKER: Yes, you are. Here, have some more.

FEMALE SPEAKER: I need to lay down. I don’t feel so good.

MALE SPEAKER: No, no, no, no. Not here. Not here.

    FEMALE SPEAKER: Take me home.

MALE SPEAKER: I can’t leave. It’s my frat party. I actually– But I’ll tell you what, let me take you upstairs. You can use my bed. OK?

    FEMALE SPEAKER: Sure.

MALE SPEAKER: All right. Come on, Talia. I got you.

FEMALE SPEAKER: I remember him lying me down on a bed and then he started kissing me. I think I kissed him back. And then he started taking off my pants. I told him to stop, but I must have passed out. When I woke up later, I didn’t have anything on. I just grabbed my clothes and got the hell out of there. I feel like such a fool. I had too much to drink. I don’t know why I let it happen.

FEMALE SPEAKER: Thank you for sharing. It sounds like you still feel responsible for what happened. Has anyone else had similar feelings about something that’s happened to them?

FEMALE SPEAKER: There was this guy once, I told him no just like you. I told him really loud, but it didn’t matter. He did what he wanted anyway. He raped me. And for some reason, I blamed myself for it. It took a long time and a lot of help to realize I was wrong. It wasn’t my fault. Just like it’s not your fault. That frat boy, he’s the one to blame.

FEMALE SPEAKER: When it happened to me some of the people in my life, people I loved, they said it was my fault. Said that I shouldn’t have been where I was. Said it wouldn’t have happened otherwise. But it wasn’t my fault. It wasn’t. But to have people that you trust say those things about you, it’s confusing. It hurts.

FEMALE SPEAKER: Thank you for sharing your thoughts and being supportive. It’s important in a group like this.

FEMALE SPEAKER: Is it? Is it really? I’m not so sure. It hurts talking about it like this. It just, it keeps hurting
